Several people were at Ace Hardware Thursday in Wexford, making preparations ahead of Friday’s storm.

“We are so busy. People are prepping, getting ready for the holidays and for an ice storm. It’s crazy,” said the Ace Hardware Wexford owner, Laurie Luitgaarden.

“I fueled up a generator. I bought a lot of rechargeable batteries and bought rechargeable flashlights,” said customer Paul Martin.

The storm is expected to bring ice, snow, rain, heavy winds and bitterly cold temperatures.

Those conditions could make it difficult for crews to fix downed lines and get power back up right away.

“When we get wind over 40 mph, our crews cannot safely go up on the bucket trucks. That weather can hamper us,” said Todd Meyers, First Energy spokesperson.

Many families are concerned they could be without power for several hours or even days over the holidays.

Power companies suggest families need to be ready for potential long-term outages.

If you have a generator, that’s ideal.

If not, you can stock up on flashlights, firewood and extra batteries.

Also, have blankets, water bottles and food that doesn’t have to be cooked or refrigerated on hand .

The store’s owner said they have a lot of supplies flying off the shelves.

“They are buying all the flashlights. A lot of batteries are going out today and candles and any of the necessities,” said Luitgaarden.

The store is well stocked, but they have a big shipment of supplies coming in early Friday morning that will include extra firewood and generators.
