'Tis the season for toll increases. Here's what to expect this month driving in New Jersey
The start of another new year means another round of toll hikes.
Fees to use the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey crossings — including the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel and Holland Tunnel — go up more than 6% starting Sunday, Jan. 8.
On Jan. 1, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority's 3% toll hikes on the turnpike and Garden State Parkway went into effect.
Both agencies cited inflation and the need to boost revenues among the reasons for the increases.
The agencies now use indexing systems to determine toll increases and when they should take place, a change that also eliminated hearings on those matters, though the public can weigh in at board meetings or in written statements.
Here are the toll increases that go into effect this month:
Port Authority crossings
These include the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, Holland Tunnel, Outerbridge Crossing, Goethals Bridge and Bayonne Bridge:
E-ZPass tolls during off-peak hours will rise to $12.75, from $11.75.
E-ZPass tolls during peak hours will rise to $14.75, from $13.75.
Tolls delivered by mail will rise to $17, up from $16.
New Jersey Turnpike
The average turnpike toll for passenger cars increased from $4.95 to $5.10. Peak period E-ZPass tolls are up from $5.62 to $5.79, and off-peak E-ZPass rates increased from $4.22 to $4.35.
Garden State Parkway
Parkway tolls increase from $1.96 for E-ZPass customers to $2.02 and from $2 to $2.10 for those paying cash.
