Titans coordinator Dean Pees back in Nashville after Sunday scare

Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Dean Pees is back in Nashville after spending Sunday night in an Indianapolis hospital.

Pees fell ill in the coaches’ box at Lucas Oil Stadium early in the Titans’ game against the Indianapolis Colts and was tended to by paramedics and brought to the hospital.

Tests came back negative

Reporter Paul Kuharsky tweeted on Monday evening that Pees’ symptoms initially presented as a mini-stroke, but tests ruled that out, and it determined that it was a nerve issue with one of his eyes.

Titans coach Mike Vrabel told media on Monday, “everything that would be really worrisome has been ruled out by the neurologists in Indy.”

Pees returned to Tennessee on Monday.

Will return to team soon

Vrabel, who played for Pees in New England when Pees was linebackers coach and then defensive coordinator, thanked Colts general manager Chris Ballard for going to check on Pees at the hospital when the Titans were readying to return to Nashville on Sunday night.

While Pees will be able to return to work — the Titans travel to Houston to face the Texans for “Monday Night Football” — Vrabel said he’ll be keeping an eye on the 69-year-old.

“Dean loves this team, he loves his players,” Vrabel said. “He wants to come in … I told him to work banker’s hours for the rest of the week — come in at 9, and make sure you are out of here at 5 o’clock. But I do see him coming back shortly. But I want to make sure he is getting plenty of rest, and we are not rushing anything. We do have an extra day with the Monday night game.

“We’ll help him (in preparation). I feel confident in the guys we have here. I’ll be in there, and I am in there a lot as it is. I don’t think it is going to be anything different. I sit in there with those guys all the time. And I think when Dean feels good enough to be here an extended amount of time – he’ll be here plenty. We’ll make sure he has everything he needs at home. … He is trying to come in this afternoon, and we have the security guards are making sure he doesn’t come in here.”

Pees announced earlier this year that he was retiring, after several years as the Baltimore Ravens coordinator. But when his former pupil, Vrabel, called, his retirement ended up being quite short-lived.
