Tiverton High School Class of 2023 Top 10 students

The following students were honored as the top 10 students in the Tiverton High School Class of 2023.

Ethan Aguiar

1. Valedictorian Ethan Aguiar is the son of Steven and Elizabeth Aguiar. Ethan is a member of the National Honor Society and the RI Honor Society. He was a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. He has received the State House Recognition, State House of Representatives Recognition, Student Service Award, Student Council MVP, Outstanding Math Student, Outstanding Computer Technology Student, Best Overall Science Student, and Outstanding Spanish Student. Ethan’s school activities include Chess Club, Political Engagement Club, Portuguese Language Club and Readers’ Forum. He completed 75 hours of community service at the Tiverton Public Library. He plays piano and participated in multiple years at the Piano Guild and Royal Conservatory of Music. Ethan will be attending Brown University majoring in Chemistry on the Pre Med Track.

2. Salutatorian Conner Nobrega is the son of Gilberto and Charlene Nobrega. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the RI Honor Society. He received the National Honor Society Character Pillar, State House of Representatives Recognition, State Senate Recognition, Lions Club Scholarship, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal Scholarship, Bally’s Scholarship, American Mathematical Society Award, Outstanding Chemistry Student, High Honors, and the AP Scholar Award. He played soccer and tennis. Conner was a Class Representative and a member of Peer Helping Network. He was Captain of the Tiverton High School Boy Soccer Team, Boys Soccer Div II All First Team, Boys Soccer Div. III State Champions, First Team All Division Soccer Div. III, Div. III State Championships All Tournament Team, Arthur Pachooke Medeiros Memorial Award (Awarded to a member of The Men’s Soccer Team for Outstand Performance), and Div. II Tennis First Team Doubles. He was a Tiverton Youth Soccer Coach. Connor will be attending the University of Rhode Island majoring in Pharmacy. In the future he hopes to become a research pharmacist and to earn mad bread.

3. Charles Greer Page is the son of Charles and Margot Page. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the RI Honor Society. Greer received the State Senate Recognition, State House of Representatives Recognition, and The Fran Williamson Scholarship. Greer will be attending The University of Vermont majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

4. Lexey LaBonte is the daughter of Jennifer LaBonte. She is a member of the National Honor Society and RI Honor Society. She received State House of Representatives Recognition, State Senate Recognition, Lions Club Scholarship, The Vasco daGama Portuguese American Society Scholarship, Middletown Knights of Columbus, Outstanding English Student, Outstanding Jr. Social Studies Student, David S. Frerichs Jr. Memorial Scholarship, Community Service Award, Outstanding World Language Student in the Study of Spanish, The Silver Seal of Biliteracy Award for English and Spanish. She assisted teachers at Fort Barton Elementary School, donated toys and food to the National Honor Society, organized product drives for the Confetti Foundation in Middletown, RI. She was involved in the Unified Tigers, Readers’ Forum, Yearbook, Confetti Club (Founder & Leader) and the S.A.L.S.A Club. Lexey will beattending Providence College majoring in Biology (Pre-med) to become a pediatric Pulmonologist at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

5. Benjamin Sowa is the son of Jeffrey and Jennifer Sowa. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the RI Honor Society. He received State House of Representatives Recognition and State Senate Recognition. He received the Civic Leadership Award, AP Scholar Award, Golden Dozen Award, The Silver Seal of Biliteracy Award, the Unsung Hero Award, The Honorable Edward P. Sowa Jr. memorial Scholarship, and the Tiverton Little League Scholarship. He was a member of the Mock Trial Team, Student Council and the Band. He played football, basketball and tennis. Ben was captain of the Football Team and Division II Tennis All Division First Team Doubles. He was a referee for the Tiverton Junior Basketball League. Benjamin will be attending Boston College majoring in communications. Heplans on attending Law School after college and becoming a Lawyer.

6. Joshua Wood is the son of Peter and Lesley Wood. He is a member of the National Honor Society and RI Honor Society. He received State Senate Recognition and State House of Representatives Recognition, The Conrad Beaulieu Memorial Scholarship, the David S. Frerichs Jr. Memorial Scholarship, William Byrne Scholarship Class of 1986, and the Le Moyne College Heights Award. Joshua is a member of the Varsity Soccer Team Captain, Boys Varsity Soccer 2021 division three division and state champions and the Varsity Track and Field Team Captain and 2023 second-team and class in weight throw, 2022 second-team all-class in the hammer throw. Nationals qualifier for the hammer throw in the 2022 and 2023 indoor and outdoor seasons. School record holder in the hammer throw and the weight throw. He received the rank of Eagle Scout. Joshua was a member of Cyberpatriot and a Tiverton Land Trust volunteer at the Pardon Gray Reservation. Joshua will be attending Sacred Heart University majoring in Physical Therapy. He hopes to open his own clinic.

7. Madison Mello is the daughter of Jennifer and Edward Mello. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Rhode Island Society. She received the Salve Regina Book Award for Leadership and Service, The Megan Cordeiro Memorial Scholarship, the Aspiring Educator Award, State Senate Recognition and the State House of Representatives Recognition. Maddie received the David S. Frerichs Jr. Memorial Scholarship, the Carolyn St. Michel Scholarship Class of 1986, NEA/Tiverton Scholarship, Chief Gunner’s Mate Thomas Eadie Award, and Outstanding Physical Education/Health Student. Her sports activities include Soccer, Track and Field, and Bruno United Fc Soccer Club. She participated in Unified Basketball, President of Unified Tigers, Secretary for Student Council and the Confetti Club. Maddie volunteered at the St. Theresa’s Thanksgiving Dinner, Positive Synergy Halloween Party, Ranger School Halloween Party, a volunteer coach at Tiverton Middle School, National Honor Society toy drive, Little Compton Christmas bake sale and the THS graduation set-ups. Maddie will be attending Rhode Island Collegemajoring in Special Education and Chemistry. She plans on playing for the RIC soccer team.

8. Cassie Taber is the daughter of Carrie and Josh Taber. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the RI Honor Society. Cassie received State House of Representatives Recognition, State Senate Recognition, Outstanding Art Student, Tinney Family Arts Scholarship, Tiverton Athletic Boosters Scholarship, Stone Bridge Volunteer Fire Department Scholarship, Student Council Carolyn St. Michel Memorial Scholarship, CTE Visual Arts, and George Eastman Young Leaders Award. She is treasurer for the Class of 2023, Drum Major of the marching band, and Concert band section leader. She played Varsity Field hockey. Team Captain junior and senior year. All state selection her senior year and varsity Softball. Cassie will be attending Endicott College majoring in Studio Arts & Education. She wants to be a high school level art teacher and help students better their mental health by giving them healthy outlets to express themselves.

9. Samantha Bettencourt is the daughter of Robert and Jan Bettencourt. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the RI Honor Society. Samantha received State Senate Recognition, State House of Representatives Recognition, Saint Michael’s College Book Award, Aspiring Educator Award, Tiverton Little League Scholarship, David S. Frerichs Jr. Memorial Scholarship, Bally’s Scholarship, the Hector S. Levesque Memorial Award, and the Silver Seal of Biliteracy Award. She played Varsity Tennis, Varsity Basketball, and Varsity Softball. She earned First Team Tennis All-Division Singles grade 11, Second Team Tennis All-Division Singles grade 12, First Team Basketball All Division 2B South grade 10, Second Team Basketball Team Division 2-B grade 11, Second Team Basketball Division 2-B grade 12, and The Ruth Rocha Memorial Awards in grade 11. She participated in Unified Tigers, Confetti Club, Tiger Tales, Student Council, Student Council Executive Board and the Peer Helping Network. Samantha will be attending Bridgewater State University majoring in Spanish and Secondary Education.

10. Mackenzie Oliveira is the daughter of Laurel and Jeffrey Oliveira. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the RI Honor Society. She received State Senate Recognition, State House of Representatives Recognition, Lions Club Scholarship, The Tiverton Little League Scholarship, NEA Tiverton Scholarship, Community Service Award, James M. Saunders Science Achievement Award, The Civic Leadership, Ruth Rocha Memorial Award, and RI Interscholastic Leadership Award. Her school activities include Student Council, all four years, Executive Board junior and senior year, Unified Tigers, Lunch Buddy, Peer Helping Network, and the Confetti Club. She played Unified Basketball her Junior and Senior year. Varsity Tennis for four years and Captain her senior year. She played Second Singles grade 12, Third Singles and Third Doubles grade 11. She played Varsity Basketball for four years, VarsitySoftball for four years. She played Second baseman her Junior and Senior year. She received the Sportsmanship Award for Tennis her senior year. Her Community activities include Tiverton Little League, Tiverton Junior Basketball and volunteering for the Portsmouth School Department. Mackenzie will be attending Eckerd College majoring in Marine Biology and Animal Studies.
