Tiverton Little League softball all-stars win a game before being ousted from regionals

The Tiverton Little League Majors Division softball all-stars won every district and state tournament game via the mercy rule en route to earning a berth in the New England regional tournament in Bristol, Connecticut.

Tiverton managed a 9-4 regional-play victory over Canton, Massachusetts on Sunday night, but felt the pain it inflicted on in-state teams in its other two contests, dropping a pair of mercy-rule decisions.

Colchester, Vermont, scored a dozen runs in the second inning as it knocked Tiverton from the regionals with a 20-1, three-inning victory Monday. Tiverton’s opening game on Saturday was a 12-1, four-inning setback to Milford, Connecticut.

Tiverton looked like the team that won the Rhode Island state title in its Sunday triumph over Massachusetts. The local squad cracked 10 hits in total and scored all but one of its runs in the first two innings as it opened an 8-1 edge it would not relinquish.

After scoring three runs on passed balls in the opening frame against Massachusetts, Tiverton’s Lilliana Luis and Brooke Sowa stroked one-out base hits and Elodie Cannon walked to fill the bases in the second frame.

Paisley Parisee and Carlie Martin drew bases-loaded walks to plate two runs before Kayln Aubuchon smacked a two-run single and Adalie Wolfe had a scoring ground out as the locals gained their seven-run lead.

Martin singled, stole second base — one of six steals for Tiverton on the day — and scored on Wolfe’s line single in the sixth inning. Wolfe threw 91 pitches, allowed six hits, walked three and struck out three in earning the complete-game victory.

Sowa finished with three hits, and Sophie Morales and Luis had two hits apiece. Martin had a hit, RBI and scored three runs and Wolfe and Aubuchon had a single and two RBIs each.

In the regional-opening loss to Connecticut, Sowa had Tiverton’s only two hits and Cannon’s sacrifice fly plated Parisee with the locals’ only run. Tiverton made five errors which led to nine unearned runs for Connecticut.

Against Vermont, Kristina DeCotis drew a one-out walk in the third inning, stole second and third base and came home on Sowa’s fielder’s choice grounder to account for Tiverton’s lone run. Cannon’s first-inning single was Tiverton’s only hit. Sowa went 5-for-9 at the plate in the three tournament games.
