Tiverton softball all-stars cap dominant run with 1st state title. Here's how they did it.

TIVERTON — There really wasn’t much jumping around and screaming, nor was there a water-cooler dousing celebration from the players on the Tiverton Little League Major Division softball team, even after it became the first town team to ever capture a Little League state championship.

It was business as usual for the 11- and 12-year-old Tiverton all-stars, who shut down South Kingstown 13-1 on Wednesday night at the Town Farm Recreation Area.

“I’m just glad Tiverton can make an event in history,” Tiverton pitcher Adalie Wolfe said. “It’s never been done before and I’m just shocked and happy that we made it this far. I did not expect this.

“It means a lot to me. I’m very proud of my team and how far we’ve come as a whole.”

Tiverton shortstop Elodie Cannon said, “I’ve never seen this happen before in Tiverton. It’s great for our town and I’m really excited.”

Tiverton coach Mike Martin put the result into perspective.

“This is awesome, man. These kids are incredible,” he said. “A lot of these girls were on the minors’ all-star team last year that just fell short of getting to this stage. Seeing them grow and turn into what they are now is pretty incredible.”

Tiverton dismantled the competition in grabbing the District 2 title, then in capturing the state crown. Tiverton outscored its opponents 96-9 in winning all five tournament games — each of which ended by the mercy rule. The Tiverton girls may have faced their toughest opponents when they played against each other in the four-team town league.

“The competition in the league was huge and when we merged them together, we knew it was going to be a powerhouse,” Martin said. “We’re clearly seeing that as the tournament goes on.

“We’ve just been fortunate. Everything has been peaking for these girls at the right time. There’s just not really a weak spot on this team, offensively or defensively. It’s been like that all year.”

Next stop: The New England regional tournament

Tiverton now will represent Rhode Island in the New England regional tournament in Bristol, Connecticut. That event begins Saturday, July 23, when Tiverton will play the host state representative.

“It will be really fun. We’ve kind of all bonded so it will be a fun time,” Cannon said. “We all have watched a couple of videos, films of other teams.

“Some of us are going to watch the teams in Connecticut this weekend to see our competition. I’m not (over) confident, but we have a great group of girls so whatever happens we’ll still be friends.”

Tiverton, which really hasn’t been tested in all-star play, is climbing the next rung in the competition ladder and will be playing the top teams in New England.

“Honestly, I think these girls can compete,” Martin said. “I’m really looking forward to them playing some teams that will really give them a run for their money.

“All through this tournament we’ve had to pull the reins in on them a lot. They practice really hard and they’re aggressive. I’m super excited to see what they can do going forward. They’re a great group all around.”

Cannon, who also plays travel ball for the Rhode Island Thunder, looks forward to the challenge at regionals.

“I feel like we’ll see a little more competitive teams in Connecticut,” Cannon said. “It will be more equal. I know for certain it will be faster pitching. Maybe there will be a little more spin on the ball. Nothing we can’t handle.”
