TJ tennis team goes 1-1 at Class 1 state tournament

Oct. 11—BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Thomas Jefferson Independent girls tennis team finished 1-1 in the Class 1 state tournament on Monday at the Bolivar tennis courts.

The Cavaliers earned a 5-4 win over Bolivar in the sectional round before falling 5-3 to Notre Dame de Sion in the quarterfinals. TJ ended its team portion of the season with an impressive 14-1 record.

TJ picked up four wins in singles, with Allison Ding defeating Sophia Vestal (6-2, 5-0), Jeanna Jeyaraj defeating Brynley Waters (4-6, 6-1, 10-6), Kyla Yang defeating Reagan Hunt (6-3, 7-5) and Warda Morsy defeating Sofia Smashey (6-1, 6-2).

Yang and Mayson Solum teamed up to claim a doubles win for the Cavaliers over Bolivar's Waters and Kami Bryan (8-6).

Against Notre Dame de Sion, TJ had two singles wins as Yang defeated Lauryn Murphy (6-4, 6-4) and Jeyaraj defeated Katherine Spenceri (4-6, 6-0, 10-7). Ding and Jeyaraj picked up a doubles win over Anna McGeeney and Spenceri (8-5).

Ding and Jeanna Jeyaraj will compete Class 1 state singles tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.
