TL Cares winner chooses Alzheimer's Association for $1,000 donation

Oct. 6—WILKES-BARRE — Paulinette Tippins has a very personal reason for choosing the Greater Pennsylvania chapter of the Alzheimer's Association as her designated charity to receive a $1,000 donation through the TL Cares program.

Tippins' mother is 94 and has Alzheimer's disease and Tippins said she hopes the $1,000 will help organization continue to serve patients such as her.

"My mother has Alzheimer's," she said. "I've read a lot about what the Alzheimer's Association does — they do a lot of testing and refer patients to doctors if they may have Alzheimer's."

Tippins and her husband, Doug, of Plains Township, were the most recent recipients of $1,000 though the TL Cares cash giveaway program.

"Maybe we will get a new bathroom," Tippins said. "But I guess I'll have to give my husband half," she said with a laugh. "Maybe we will just put it away for a rainy day."

Tippins said she and her husband, who have been married for 47 years, have been Times Leader subscribers for 43 years.

Tippins said she couldn't believe it when representatives from the Times Leader contacted her on Friday to let her know that she won the $1,000 weekly prize.

"It made my weekend," she said.

Tippins and her husband have lived in Plains Township for 23 years and are both currently enjoying retirement.

Tippins said that she enjoys doing the daily Jumble puzzle, local news, new recipes and the coupons that are offered. She said her husband likes the crossword puzzles, Sudoku and the sports pages.

Times Leader subscribers are automatically entered into the TL Cares program, making it even easier for folks like Tippins to cash in and win $1,000.

In addition to their own $1,000 prize, the couple also were able to choose a nonprofit organization for the Times Leader to donate an additional $1,000 to.

This was the second straight week that the Greater Pennsylvania chapter of the Alzheimer's Association was chosen to receive $1,000.
