Quote: "First of all, let me tell you that today, Melitopol is more Ukrainian than ever.

The city is not just the land it stands on, not just its buildings, its schools and kindergartens. The city is made up, first of all, of the people [that live there]. Some of them remain in the temporarily occupied Melitopol, some are in other parts of the country, others are abroad.

If we focus on the city itself, the situation there is extremely difficult."

"It wasn’t just a turn of phrase when I said that Melitopol is now more Ukrainian than ever. I’m sure we will get to discuss the fake referendum in our city. [Russia is organising so-called "referendums" on the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine; local residents are expected to vote on whether they want to "join Russia" - ed]

Initial polling suggests that 90% of Melitopol residents have either refused to take part in the pseudo-referendum or said that they did not support the occupation. And let me reiterate, this is just those people who stayed in Melitopol."
