One of the most popular cookies is the sugar cookie. Having been made for centuries, it is a simple cookie made with sugar, flour, butter, eggs, vanilla, and baking soda or powder. It can be formed by hand, dropped by the spoonful, or rolled out, and can be cut into circles or shapes. Although sugar cookies are often eaten plain, they can be frosted or iced and can be topped with sprinkles or more sugar.

Sugar cookies are believed to have gotten their start in the mid-18th century in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. There they were made by German Protestant settlers and became known as Nazareth cookies.  As sugar became more available, so did sugar cookies, and they increased in popularity.
