Small Business Saturday is an annual shopping holiday that takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The day is dedicated to supporting local small businesses. It first took place in 2010, at a time when the economy was recovering from the Great Recession, and it was sponsored by American Express, in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. American Express still sponsors the day, and there are many other supporters as well. It has grown in popularity over the years. In 2011 the U.S. Senate passed a resolution designating the day as Small Business Saturday, and similar resolutions have been made it subsequent years. By its third year the day was celebrated in all 50 states.
