Todd Stammich resigns as South Bend Washington football coach after four seasons

SOUTH BEND — There will be a new coach calling the shots for the South Bend Washington High School football program come this fall.

Todd Stammich announced his resignation following four seasons in charge of the Panther program.

Stammich informed his team of the decision Wednesday. According to reports, he cited a desire to spend more time with his family as the reason for his resignation.

"I have been coaching in South Bend since the early 90's with the last 12 since my children were born," said Stammich in an email Thursday night.  "The time spent away from my family has become difficult to justify, so I felt is was time to give someone else a chance to coach at Washington.  Hopefully they can improve on the results we produced in terms of wins and losses."

Stammich went 14-24 in four seasons at Washington. His best season was his first in 2019 as the Panthers posted a 6-4 mark for the program's first winning season since going 8-3 in 2015.

Stammich spent 12 years at Jefferson Intermediate as a guidance counselor prior to being hired at Washington, where his parents attended high school. He previously spent 11 years coaching at Riley.

Stammich, who teaches at Washington, said he has no plans to return to coaching at the high school level. The classy coach also wanted to emphasize that he will miss many people for their support during his coaching time at Washington.

"I have no plans to coach unless you count my daughters' youth teams," noted Stammich.

"I will miss working with my AD Garland Hudson, the corporation AD Milt Lee and all of my assistant coaches," Stammich stated.  "I don't have the words to describe the level of support that each of them gave me.  Most of all I will miss the young men of Washington High School who tried their best for me the last four years."

The Panthers finished 2-8 in 2022 with wins over Clay (52-0) and Bowman Academy (33-8). Washington was 1-4 in the Northern Indiana Conference last fall and concluded the season with a 48-14 loss to NorthWood in a Class 3A sectional contest.

A coaching search for Stammich's replacement is underway at Washington. The Panthers open the 2023 campaign at Hammond Central on August 18.
