"Like I said before, one great thing the ECB is now, is it is a very open conversation about how guys are feeling and player well-being. Having my family with me during the whole time at the IPL has obviously been a huge plus for me and my mental well being and obviously time spent with them. And it still being relatively short tour with three extra ODIs, I was very keen to go and play and I have also really missed playing ODI cricket. Since the World Cup I have only played three games I think, so I was really looking forward to getting back in amongst that team."

"I think for most of the lads an X-Box is quite high on the priority list. Netflix, go reading books. And I think really if you are feeling under pressure, or not quite feeling yourself, having the confidence to open up and talk about it. I think all of us will go through it at different stages where you feel a bit homesick, or you feel a bit claustrophobic by not being able to get out and about as you might usually want to, so, we might just have to make sure you are very aware of that. And I think one thing the ECB is excellent at is looking after the players' mental wellbeing."

STORY: As he discussed the mental health of cricketers who are spending week after week in biosecure bubbles, it was appropriate that England's Jos Buttler took time out to interact with his young daughter during a Zoom call on Monday (November 16).

The wicketkeeper batsman said one of the reasons he was able to cope at the recent IPL tournament held in the UAE was because of the presence of his wife Louise and daughter Georgia, who is 18-months-old.

In other eras, cricketers would have gone months on end without seeing their families, but with depression a recurring problem within sport - attributed to long tours and the pressures of a mentally challenging game - national boards and domestic sides are now far more sympathethic to the pastoral needs of their players.

Buttler spent most of the second half of the summer in a bubble with the England team as they took on the West Indies and Pakistan in a series of back-to-back test matches, before travelling to Dubai for the IPL.

England's tour of South Africa - compromising three T20s and three ODIs - sees the squad fly out on Monday before returning to the UK in the second week of December, another month on the road.

"I think all of us will go through it at different stages where you feel a bit homesick, or you feel a bit claustrophobic by not being able to get out and about as you might usually want to, so we might just have to make sure you are very aware of that," said Buttler. "And I think one thing the ECB is eERxcellent at is looking after the players' mental wellbeing."
