You told me to try Bozo’s Grocery. I discovered why it’s a hidden gem on the MS Coast.

It’s becoming a tradition here at the Sun Herald.

In 2011, we described Bozo’s Grocery as “Happiness in a white paper sack.” Six years later, we covered Bozo’s expansion and the honor it had recently earned from Coastal Living as one of the 20 best seafood dives ever.

Another six years have passed and our return was due. This time they sent me to find that happiness.

Bozo’s seems to perfect its space between its status as both a well-known establishment and a hidden gem on the South Mississippi Coast.

Around since 1956, the original building still carries the charm of a local market. Owner Keith Delcambre opted to expand with Bozo’s Too at a next-door location and preserved the localism of the grocer.

The at-home feel was easy to notice, and not just because I had plenty of time to soak it in. The wait for my order was significant, right at one hour. But it was busy and everyone who strayed in seemed to know someone else already inside.

I’m not one to judge a restaurant on service, there are many circumstances that just can’t be helped. And if the food slaps, it doesn’t matter.

I am here to tell you the food indeed slapped.

You didn’t need me to tell you that, you’ve known all along. You knew the Under the Sea order of butterfly shrimp and crab clusters with corn, sausage and potatoes was a banger, especially when you ramp it up with the spicy seasoning.

There’s something about a cacophony of spicy seafood dumped into a s=Styrofoam box that speaks to us on a metaphysical level. In a language only understood by the ‘Goulans and their direct neighbors.

It’s a language they are willing to share with anyone who shows an interest in learning and that’s what makes Bozo’s special.

If you happen to find yourself on Ingalls Ave. in Jackson County, do yourself a favor. Step into Bozo’s and change your life.

Change it for the better.
