State police have apprehended several suspects who ran from the scene of a car crash Saturday afternoon in Tolland, prompting a brief shelter in place warning to nearby residents.

The crash occurred at about 3 p.m. near St. Matthew Church on Tolland Green and several suspects who fled the car were “believed to be armed with handguns,” according an alert sent to residents.

State police asked those residents to stay in their homes for about half an hour until a second alert indicated the suspects were detained and troopers had deemed the area safe.

Further information about the crash and suspects was not immediately available shortly after the incident Saturday afternoon.
