In the ’90s, when Tom Hanks was on set filming many of his critically acclaimed movies, he was typically found hanging out or brainstorming ideas in an Airstream trailer between takes. Now, his home away from home can be yours, with a presale estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.
On August 13, the 1992 Airstream Model 34 Limited Excella Travel Trailer is heading to auction. The Academy Award winner purchased the aluminum vehicle in 1993 and had it customized to his liking, but is now parting with it because he doesn’t have as much time as he used to during setups. “I got it in the days when movies moved slower,” Hanks told Bonhams Magazine. “I had spent too much time in regular trailers with ugly décor and horribly uncomfortable furniture, so I decided to buy a brand-new Airstream shell with an interior made to my own request.”
Measuring 33 feet long, the trailer is complete with all its furniture and amenities, including a bed, a couch, a wooden table and chair set, and a faux fireplace. The Hollywood icon noted that he “didn’t want anything built-in” besides the kitchen and bathroom when designing. Up until 2017, the trailer traveled to 18 locations across the country, making stops everywhere from Seattle for Sleepless in Seattle to South Carolina for Forrest Gump. Its windows are even adorned with clapperboard stickers, commemorating the locations.
The Airstream also features a bathroom with a Hollywood lights mirror and an air conditioner signed by Hanks himself. “You haven’t lived well until you survive a movie-stopping thunderstorm in an Airstream while on location in Carolina,” added Hanks. “But, more than anything, an Airstream is gorgeous and cozy, which is why everyone who visited mine went away wanting one.”
Bidding for the 1992 Airstream Model 34 Limited Excella Travel Trailer begins on August 13 with Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction. Additionally, Hanks is auctioning a 2010 Ford F-450 Super Duty pick-up (estimated between $70,000 and $100,000), which was bought to tow the Airstream; his customized 1980 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser (estimated between $70,000 and $125,000); and his high-performance 2015 Tesla Model S P85D (estimated between $70,000 and $100,000).
