Tom Hardy could star as a World War II SAS soldier in Steven Knight’s new television drama, according to reports.

Based on the bestselling book 'SAS: Rogue Heroes' by Ben Macintyre, Knight says the series will be a “secret history telling the story of exceptional soldiers.” According to I News, Hardy is being lined up for the leading role of Northern Irish SAS co-founder Blair “Paddy” Mayne.

Knight and Hardy have previously worked together on the hit BBC shows Peaky Blinders, which is set to return later this year, and Taboo, which Hardy co-created and co-produced.

Speaking to the Times about the upcoming show, Knight said: “We will shine a light on remarkable true events informed by the people who shaped them.”

Macintyre's authorised book, which was published in 2016 and adapted into a BBC2 documentary soon after, is the result of unparalleled access to the SAS’ private archives.

The show, written by Knight, will tell the story of how the Special Air Service came to exist during World War II.

Martin Haines, joint Managing Director for production company Kudos, said, “The sheer scale of the adventures brilliantly told by Ben, and the extraordinary and varied characters involved, make this an incredibly exciting project. With Steven on board we have the opportunity to redefine the genre completely.”
