Tom Holland Says He Wouldn't Do Iconic 'Lip Sync Battle' Again

Tom Holland’s appearance on Lip Sync Battle in 2017 provided a performance that still goes viral every so often six years later—and with good reason. But the actor recently told The Hollywood Reporter why he would never do something like that again.
The Spider-Man actor went up against franchise co-star Zendaya in the competition show, both opting to gender-bend in their respective performances. Zendaya covered Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic” while Holland shocked audiences with a mash-up of “Singin’ in the Rain” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella”—complete with fishnet stockings and dance moves that left fans swooning.
“You’d never catch me doing that now. Just because I don’t want to do a fucking TV show that I don’t need to do,” Holland admitted. “I’ve really worked hard in my career and I’ve really been calculated in deciding what it is I do and when I do it. And for all the movies that I’m incredibly proud of, the Lip Sync Battle is what I get the most compliments for.”
But though he sounds frustrated with what he seems to view as an imbalance in what fans appreciate the most from his work, the actor also told THR that he’s proud of the video clip.
“I like that it left a lasting impact,” he said.
Holland also acknowledged that he didn’t really view his performance as a take down of toxic masculinity, saying he didn’t realize people would see it as “forward-thinking.”
“I was just like, ‘Yeah, fuck it. I’ll put some fishnets on and dance in the rain. That’ll be really fun. I don’t care,’” he said.
And regardless of his thoughts on the whole thing now, it’s a gift the internet will treasure forever.
