Tom Manning is out as Iowa State football's offensive coordinator; strength coach also departs

Offensive coordinator Tom Manning and strength and conditioning coach Dave Andrews are no longer with the Iowa State football program.

“Decisions such as these are never easy because of the impact they have on the lives of individuals and their families, however, in order for us to move the program forward, I felt it necessary to make these changes at this time,” coach Matt Campbell said in a Friday statement released by the Iowa State athletics department.

“Tom and Dave are tremendous men who have had a hand in our success over the last few years, and we wish them and their families all the best in the future.”

Running backs and receivers coach Nate Scheelhaase will be the interim coordinator, Campbell said.

Manning has been Iowa State’s offensive coordinator for all but one of coach Matt Campbell’s seven seasons. That was in 2018, when he coached Indianapolis Colts tight ends in the NFL. Campbell kept the offensive coordinator job open in Manning’s absence.

Iowa State’s 4-8 record this season included an offense that statistically was the Big 12’s worst after losing four players from the 2021 offense who are currently on NFL rosters.

Manning has a contract that expires in June 2024. His salary was $950,000 this season, and the contract calls for a hike to $1 million on July 1, 2023. Andrews came to Iowa State in February 2021. His contract, which also expires in June 2024, calls for a raise from $525,000 this season to $550,000 on July 1, 2023.

Iowa State could be liable for all or part of that, depending if they get other jobs. The contract states that "should the employee begin new employment during the term at a lower salary, the University will pay the difference in salary for the remaining period of the term."
