St. Thomas’ Glenn Caruso was selected as Pioneer Football Coach of the Year on Monday after leading the his team to an 8-0 conference record. The Tommies finished 10-1 overall and ranked 19th in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.

St. Thomas jumped to Division I football in 2021, joining the non-scholarship Pioneer League. Caruso, who was named the Division III coach of the year six times from 2010-2015, also is a finalist list for FCS’s Eddie Robinson Award as National Coach of the Year for the second year. The Tommies lost their season opener at Southern Utah, then won 10 straight, beating 2021 co-Pioneer League champions Davidson and San Diego the last two weekend of the season.

As part of its transition to full Division I membership, St. Thomas is ineligible to compete in NCAA postseason play, including the FCS playoffs, over the next few seasons. The Tommies are 17-4 as a Division I team.
