Tompkins County Sheriff: Man flees burglary, jumps on moving tractor trailer

A bizarre series of events late Wednesday afternoon ended with one man hospitalized in critical condition.

According to a media release, the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office was called to the 100 block of Seven Mile Drive in the Town of Ithaca for a report of a white male standing in the caller's front yard shortly before 5 p.m. on Aug. 3.

The man appeared to be intoxicated.

A few minutes later, deputies responded to a burglary in progress just around the corner on Peachtree Lane. The white male suspect, who matched the description of the previous call on Seven Mile Drive, fled the burglary before the deputies arrived.

While the deputies were combing the area for the suspect, they were dispatched once more to a report of a pedestrian/tractor trailer accident at the intersection of Seven Mile Drive and Elmira Road. It was reported that the same male from the previous two calls had attempted to get into the caller's truck and fell off.

Witnesses reported the male attempted to get into their vehicle and then jumped on the back of the moving tractor trailer and tried to break the window of the cab. Witnesses said the male then jumped off of the moving tractor trailer, hitting his head on the pavement.

The male, who was unresponsive at the scene, was airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, and is in critical condition. His identity is being withheld at this time.
