Toms River Halloween Parade marches through downtown

TOMS RIVER - The 83rd annual Halloween Parade, sponsored by Toms River Fire Company 1, marched down Main and Washington streets Monday night.

Ghouls, ghosts and goblins have been taking over Toms River's downtown since 1919. The annual march has taken place almost every year, except for extraordinary occasions: during the tough times of the Great Depression and World War II, in 2012, after Superstorm Sandy devastated waterfront sections of the township, and in 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic struck.

The parade draws thousands of marchers as well as thousands of spectators. To add to the downtown fun, students from Toms River High School South decorate the windows of downtown businesses with ghoulish themes.

The parade's popularity actually led to a change in trick-or-treat dates in Toms River and the surrounding river towns: Toms River, South Toms River, Pine Beach and Beachwood all held trick or treating on Sunday so kids and their families could attend the parade.
