The Sioux Falls Police Department will be hosting multiple events for National Night Out, held annually on the first Tuesday of August.

Department spokesperson Sam Clemens said the purpose of the event is to build a community where people are more likely to look out for each other. This year's event will between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

“It’s a great chance for people to come out, meet their neighbors, get to know them,” Clemens said. “This has been very successful over the years in Sioux Falls.”

This year, several neighborhoods are hosting block parties and cookouts, said the City of Sioux Falls in its press release. The Sioux Falls Police Department, Sioux Falls Fire/Rescue, and other city departments will also attend.

“Neighborhoods across the nation will lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outside with their neighbors,” the release stated.

The benefits that Sioux Falls will receive and have received from National Night Out extend beyond the night and include higher crime and drug prevention awareness, broader support for local anti-crime programs along with participation, alerting offenders that neighborhoods are aware of suspicious activity and criminal behavior in their areas.
