Tony Award winner Ben Platt is coming home in a big way

Ben Platt's back in a New York state of mind.

And with good reason. The Broadway, film and TV star is set to headline Madison Square Garden as part of his "Reverie" tour on Tuesday, Sept. 27. He also plays the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City on Saturday, Oct. 1.

"It's so unbelievable," said Platt, best known for his Tony Award-winning performance in "Dear Evan Hansen."

"I owe so much to New York audiences in terms of giving me my real start and supporting me first, and I have had so much of my formative experiences there and hope to eventually live the majority of my life there."

There are some nerves, too.

"It's a very scary thing," he said. "My partner Noah (Galvin) and I (have) talked a lot about this. I think when you hear 'MSG is such an iconic space,' that it feels obviously like a life milestone, and I think you can put a lot of pressure on yourself to feel like 'Okay, this is my one shot.'

"So what I've been trying to do is embrace giving the best version of this particular show, and knowing that this is where I happen to be right now. This is the music that I happen to be singing right now. And it's a snapshot of who I am at this particular moment."

His return to performing live has been long delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This tour was originally scheduled for earlier this year, and pushed back once cases started climbing again.

In support of his newest album "Reverie," the tour has shifted since its conception, as have Platt's feelings about the album's music. Because of the time away from it, "I'm able to kind of re-immerse and re-appreciate it from a new lens that feels decidedly different," he said.

The tour's reminder of the album's time and place has reignited Platt's hopes for audiences at the concerts.

"I think coming to it and being able to appreciate what it was for me in that moment of the early pandemic," he said, "and how much of an escape the album was for me, really has reiterated ... how much I want that to be the case for people at this concert."

The delays in getting back on the road also have shaped the content of the tour. While most of the songs will be from "Reverie," there will songs from his first album, a few covers and a theater moment as well, he said.

Following the tour, Platt is eager to get back to his roots. He's set to star in "Parade" at New York City Center alongside Micaela Diamond in November.

"I always loved that piece very, very much," Platt said. " Winning out in very unclear, not so black and white ways ... is a really important kind of a story to tell because I think there's a lot of obsession right now with very stark, clear moral boundaries and right and wrong, etc. And so, I think it feels like a really meaningful piece to do ...

"Not to mention that it's just a very beautiful score and a beautiful musical, and I can't wait to get back to musical theater."
