Tony Vitello earns national coaching honors

Fourth-year Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello garnered two national coach of the year awards on Friday.

He becomes the first Tennessee head coach to win multiple coach of the year awards in the same season.

Vitello was named coach of the year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Perfect Game.

Rod Delmonico is the only other Tennessee head coach to win a national coach of the year award in program history.

Delmonico guided the Vols to three College World Series appearances (1995, 2001, 2005). He won 699 games at Tennessee and is the all-time wins leader in school history.

The Vols (50-16) are set to face Virginia Sunday in its first game of the 2021 College World Series.

First pitch at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska is set for 2 p.m. EDT.

Since arriving in Knoxville, Vitello has compiled a head coaching record of 134-60. Under his direction, Tennessee won the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division championship in 2021.
