Tony winners and classics fill Straz Center Broadway series lineup

Tampa’s Straz Center is offering a wide variety of musicals for its 2023-24 Broadway series, which includes major hits like “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” and “Beetlejuice,” as well as the music of Bob Dylan in “Girl from the North Country,” and revivals of “Funny Girl” and “Peter Pan.”

The subscription series features eight musicals, with several additional productions, including an extended run of “The Choir of Man.”

Oct. 24-29

A musical version of the popular Tim Burton film that had two runs on Broadway interrupted by the COVID pandemic. It features a score by Australian singer-songwriter Eddie Perfect and tells the story of a dead couple haunting the new residents of their former home. The touring cast includes Britney Coleman, who had leading roles in Asolo Repertory Theatre productions of “The Music Man” and “Camelot.”

‘Funny Girl’

Nov. 28-Dec. 3

The first Broadway revival of the musical about legendary performer Fanny Brice launched Barbra Streisand to stardom. The current production had a troubled start with Beanie Feldstein, but it has been a sold out hit since former “Glee” star Lea Michele took over in September. No announcements have been made about the touring cast.


Jan. 9-14

Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical about relationships and marriage got a twist in a recent London and Broadway revival that turned the main subject from a man into a woman exploring the possibility of getting married. No casting has been announced.

‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’

Feb. 7-18

A winner of 10 Tony Awards, this musical staged by Alex Timbers with choreography by Sonya Tayeh puts a new, lavish spin on the elaborate and decadent world created in Baz Luhrmann’s original film. It’s about a young composer who falls for a Paris cabaret star named Satine. The musical features dozens of pop hits and standards arranged in new ways.

‘Girl from the North Country’

March 27-31, 2024

Written and directed by playwright Conor McPherson, this musical uses 20 classic songs by Bob Dylan to tell the story of some people whose lives intersect in Duluth, Minnesota in 1934.

‘Mrs. Doubtfire’

April 2-7, 2024

A musical version of the hit film that starred Robin Williams about a man who masquerades as a female nanny to stay connected to his children and help their lives. It features a score by Karey Kirkpatrick and Wayne Kirkpatrick who also wrote “Something Rotten.”

‘Peter Pan’

April 30-May 5, 2024

A new production with an updated book brings to life this classic musical that sent Mary Martin, Sandy Duncan and Cathy Rigby flying across theaters as the boy who refused to grow up, his relationship with Wendy Darling and the Lost Boys and Captain Hook. No word yet on who will be playing Peter.

Everyone is a suspect in the touring musical “Clue,” based on the board game and the 1985 film comedy.


May 28-June 2, 2024

A board game became a 1985 film and is now a musical in which six mysterious guests gather at Boddy Manor for a night that includes murder, with everyone a suspect, including Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum and Colonel Mustard.

‘The Choir of Man’

Oct. 3-Nov. 26, 2023

The concert/party musical that was presented last year at Sarasota’s Van Wezel, will return to the region for an extended engagement in the intimate Jaeb Theatre with nine men performing pop, rock, Broadway and bar songs, with sing-alongs and dancing.

‘Jesus Christ Superstar’

March 5-10, 2024

This classic Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice rock opera about the final days of Jesus returns in a 50th anniversary production.

‘The Book of Mormon’

April 16-21, 2024

The tongue-in-cheek musical by the creators of “South Park” follows the adventures of two Mormon missionaries assigned to a remote part of Africa.

‘Les Miserables’

June 11-16, 2024

The return of a restaged version of the classic musical based on the novel by Victor Hugo.
