Is it too early for high school football game of year?

Montgomery Bell Academy travels to Chattanooga to face McCallie in what is a strong candidate for game of the year.

The two private schools met twice a year ago, including in the Division II-AAA state championship game, which McCallie won 28-7 for the Blue Tornado's third straight championship.

Hi y'all, this is Tom Kreager, high school sports editor of The Tennessean. Thank you for reading The Bootleg.

The MBA-McCallie regular-season meeting may go a long way in determining who will be the top seed in the East/Middle Region this season. Both teams are 2-0 entering league play.

Ole Miss commitment Marcel Reed, a four-year starter, has been spectacular through two games, and Jonothan Moore has shined as a first-year starter at running back. On defense, Gabe Fisher and Eriq George — son of former Tennessee Titan and current Tennessee State coach Eddie George — have been dominant on the defensive line.

MBA at McCallie is this week's Tennessean Game of the Week. But there are plenty of good ones to be played in the Nashville area.

The remaining top games include an intense rivalry game with Pope John Paul II traveling to Father Ryan with the winner being awarded the Bishop's Cup trophy. JPII has won the past six regular-season meetings.

For me, I'm headed down to Williamson County on Friday to watch Independence at Centennial. The Cougars under coach Matt Kriesky appear to be on an uptick.

And this is my chance to see Alabama commitment Ty Lockwood for Independence. He's missed the first two weeks due to getting his appendix removed and should play this week. Hopefully, he is healthy enough to play in both teams' Region 7-6A opener.
