Top 10 best places to retire in 2022-2023 might surprise you: Central Pa. dominates list

If you are thinking of retiring anytime soon, you may be in the best place to do it. According to a new ranking by U.S. News and World Report, Pennsylvania dominated the top of the list for having the most cities that are best-suited for retirement, and York makes the cut.

According to the report, five of the top 10 cities are in Central Pa. and four are in Florida. This is a bit of a head-scratcher, because the two states have vastly different climates, but retirement isn't a one-size-fits-all move. Add to that the need for affordable housing, and it becomes a bit clearer on why these states rule the retirement roost.

Michigan had one lone city on the list this year.

Last year, Florida held 8 of the top 10 spots. Lancaster was the only city in the commonwealth to make the top 10 at that time, coming in at number 5. York ranked number 17 last year, and rose to number five this year.

The rankings were based on an analysis of 150 metropolitan areas for how well they meet the needs and wants of retirees. The scores were calculated using a weighted average of housing affordability, happiness, desirability, retiree taxes, job market and health care quality.

Housing affordability counted for 24%. Happiness, which looked at crime rates and overall well-being, counted for 22% of the total. Healthcare quality and retiree tax rates both held 16% of the equation, while desirability counted for 13%. Finally, job opportunities accounted for 9% of the weighted total.

The weight of each index was determined by a U.S. News and World Report survey that polled people nearing retirement age (45 to 59) and those of retirement age (60 or older) to learn what matters most to them.
