What are the top 10 dog breeds in Eastern Connecticut?
The most popular dog in eastern Connecticut originates from Canada.
The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed, with 490 total registered pups, in The Bulletin’s four core towns: Norwich, Griswold, Plainfield and Killingly. This data came from dog licenses issued since June 2023, with the data provided by each town clerk’s office.
Other top 10 dog breeds include German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Chihuahuas, Pit Bulls, Yorkshire Terriers and Beagles.
Some outliers in the top 10s include Shi Tzus for Plainfield and Killingly and Border Collies for Killingly.
There are 666 dogs in Killingly, 759 in Griswold, 1,098 in Plainfield, and 1,443 dogs in Norwich.
Currently, the American Kennel Club states the French Bulldog is the most popular dog in the United States, with the most recent report using 2022 data. Labrador Retrievers are in second place. The other dogs in AKC’s top 10 are Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Poodles, Bulldogs, Rottweilers, Beagles, Dachshunds, and German Shorthaired Pointers.
Labrador Retrievers are an active, friendly and outgoing breed. They’re playful and social, but they shed a lot, according to the AKC website.
Below are each town’s top 10 dog breeds. In the data analysis, dogs with specified mixes were counted for one breed. There were some inconsistencies on how the dog breeds were labeled in the data. For example, Yorkshire Terrier might be labeled Yorkies, or Pit Bull might be labeled Pitbulls or American Pit Bulls. Some breed listings are unspecified, like Terrier or Hound, and some mixed breed dogs didn’t have their breeds listed. The numbers may reflect this.
