At each dining event, guests are presented with a specially curated, multiple-course menu. They also have the chance to meet and chat with new Free Press dining critic Lyndsay C. Green and other Free Press staffers.

Shelby is on Shelby Street in downtown Detroit’s financial district. Like an old-time speakeasy, it's in a hidden space. There are no signs. Guests enter through a lobby with a staircase that leads to Coffee Downunder coffee shop. Shelby is tucked behind a door at the back of the coffee shop. Part of its dining room is built into an old bank vault.

Along with an extensive list of spirits, Shelby has an inviting specialty cocktail menu.

Shelby’s small plates menu items are meant to be shared. They include a spiced nut mix, beef tartare, charcuterie, a cheese plate and shrimp cocktail. The Detroit Free Press Top 10 Takeover event will feature a five-course meal, including dessert. A vegetarian meal is available.

Seatings for the Top 10 Takeover are at 5 and 8 p.m. The cost is $88 per person and includes a donation to Forgotten Harvest.

Shelby's Top 10 Takeover menu:

First course
