Over 3.2 million people in the UK welcomed a pet into their lives over the last year. Many people bought a puppy to keep them company but cat ownership is also on the up. In fact, new research from Republic of Cats reveals that searches for ‘adopt a cat’ have doubled in the last 30 days, up by 121%.

But what are people calling their cats? The research has also analysed the most popular names for felines in the UK and it looks like classic names including Luna and Bella are still among the top cat names in the UK, as are common human names like Charlie.

Monikers inspired by ancient mythology like Loki have surged in popularity. Others draw inspiration from classic movies, like Simba from The Lion King.

To get specific, cat owners in Portsmouth have a fondness for kittens called Milo and, in Cardiff, 4% of cat-loving residents chose the name Smudge.

Unusual cat names that didn't quite make the list:

Even though cat names like Poppy and Milo are top of the table, there are some new ones that didn't quite make the top 20, we love the one inspired by the Mother of Dragons!

Khaleesi – This name is a royal title from the hit TV show Game of Thrones and it means "queen". Character Daenerys Targaryen received the title when she married Khal Drogo, leader of the Dothraki clan. Six cats have been crowned with this Royal moniker.

Cleocatra – A play on words, this name of Greek origin has been given to three cats this year by owners with a penchant for puns.

Cardi B – One cat in the UK is named after the chart-topping American rapper.
