Top 5 concert picks for shows this week in Sarasota, Bradenton, Palmetto and Punta Gorda

This week's concert picks start with two Billboard Latin Music Award-winning acts visiting Sarasota-Manatee on Friday, as bachata artist Joe Veras performs in Sarasota and Mexican band Beto y sus Canarios plays Palmetto. The latter show also commemorates Mexican Independence Day, while Punta Gorda Irish pub and venue Celtic Ray celebrates another holiday — Halfway to St. Patrick's Day — with daylong live music.

Meanwhile, Bradenton's Oscura continues its streak of shows featuring some of Tampa Bay's best-known punk and indie acts by hosting Wolf-Face, a "Teen Wolf"-themed punk band I saw and enjoyed many times when I lived in Tampa. Here are this week's highlights. Event details are subject to change.

After Dominican musician Monchy performed at Latin Quarters last week, another big name in the bachata genre is set to visit Sarasota this weekend, with Joe Veras coming to Bombón Restaurant & Lounge. Veras is known for tracks such as "Intentalo Tu," off his 2003 album "Carta de Verano," which won the 2004 Billboard Latin Music Award for Tropical/Salsa Airplay Track of the Year, New Artist. In recent years, Veras appeared on the song "Amor Enterrado" from the 2019 album "Utopía" by bachata superstar Romeo Santos, who is set to headline Tampa's Amalie Arena next month. 10 p.m. Friday; Bombón Restaurant & Lounge, 1118 N. Palmetto restaurant and nightclub El Sombrero will celebrate Mexican Independence Day on Friday with this event featuring a band hailing from the country, Beto y sus Canarios. The Tierra Caliente band is known for songs including "Está Llorando Mi Corazón" and "No Puedo Olvidarte," both Top 10 hits on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart and No. 1 hits on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart, with the former song also winning the 2005 Billboard Latin Music Award for Regional Mexican Airplay Track of the Year, Male Group. Beto y sus Canarios celebrates its 35th anniversary as a group this year, having formed in 1987. 9 p.m. Friday; El Sombrero, 1330 NE U.S. Highway 301, Palmetto; $45 general admission; tickeri.com

This week also marks the halfway point to St. Patrick's Day, and Punta Gorda's Celtic Ray — one of the area's most authentic Irish pubs — celebrates the occasion with a day full of live music. Clover's Revenge, whose sound blends "two Irish musical traditions: acoustic pub music and Celtic punk rock," kicks things off at 1 p.m., followed at 4 p.m. by Punta Gorda's own 12-year-old blues-rock prodigy Champ Jaxon, who appeared last year on "Ellen" alongside guest host and country superstar Brad Paisley. Local reggae favorites Jah Movement, who also headline Van Wezel's free outdoor concert series Friday Fest the previous night, play at 9 p.m. to close things out. 11 a.m. Saturday; Celtic Ray Public House, 145 E. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda; 941-916-9115; celticray.net

Wolf-Face

Bradenton's Oscura, which has been attracting some of the top musical talent from the other side of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, next features St. Pete punk rockers Wolf-Face this weekend. As their name suggests, the band is inspired by the 1985 Michael J. Fox film "Teen Wolf," dressing in costume and with several of their song titles inspired by the movie or wolves (including a convincing cover of TV on the Radio's "Wolf Like Me.") But don't let that fool you into thinking they're mere gimmick: the group has a knack for crafting genuinely catchy pop-punk tunes on albums including 2020's "Stay Golden." Pet Lizard and No Pants Maurice also perform. 7 p.m. doors, 8 p.m. show Saturday; Oscura, 816 Manatee Ave. E., Bradenton; $10 advance, $12 day of; 941-201-4950; oscura.live
