Top 5 high school football games to watch in West Texas for Week 7

Here are our top five high school football games to watch in West Texas in Week 7 of the 2022 season:

Brady (2-3) at San Angelo TLCA (2-3)

This is the District 2-3A Division II opener for both teams and it looks like it could be a competitive matchup that could go either way. After starting the season with three straight losses against Comanche, Mason and Coleman, Brady has pulled off two straight wins against Dublin and Christoval. The Bulldogs reached the regional semifinals last year and they look like a playoff contender again. After going 0-10 last year, TLCA has turned things around with a lot of close games in nondistrict. The Eagles got off to a 2-1 start with wins against Ozona and Winters, but they've dropped their last two against Ingram and Stanton. This could be a high-scoring affair and TLCA will have a better chance of winning on its home turf.

The pick: Brady 28, TLCA 24

Reagan County (3-2) at Forsan (4-1)

The Owls and Buffaloes will face off in the District 3-2A Division I opener. Reagan County has already matched its win total from last year. Quarterback Kason Brown was back in the lineup in an overtime victory against 3A D-I Kermit last week after nagging injuries from before the season started. Having him back at QB enabled his brother, Jarrett Brown, to move back to his wide receiver spot. Forsan had an open date last week after suffering its first loss against Kermit (14-13) two weeks ago. Texas Football magazine projected the Buffaloes to finish third in the district. Reagan County was picked to finish fifth. Forsan has given up 57 points in five games.

The pick: Forsan 35, Reagan County 28

Sonora (4-1) at Ozona (2-3)

Ozona will try to pull off an upset at home against Sonora in the District 3-2A Division I opener. Sonora has gotten off to a brilliant start in Blake Weston's second campaign as head coach. The Broncos rolled to blowout wins against Ballinger, Eldorado, Alpine and Harper. Their only loss was a 31-27 nail-biter on the against Coahoma, which is also 4-1. Ozona has earned wins against 2A D-II Miles and Grape Creek. This is a longtime rivalry that dates back to 1920. Sonora leads the all-time series 57-34-4. The Broncos would be heavily favored if they were playing the Lions at home this week, but since the game's in Ozona, it could be closer than a lot of people think.

The pick: Sonora 38, Ozona 21

Menard (4-2) at Robert Lee (6-0)

Robert Lee is off to its first 6-0 start since 2014. The Steers defeated their nondistrict opponents by an average of 23.5 points. Their most-lopsided blowout was a 50-0 shutout against Wilson. Menard has gotten off to a promising start in its first season of six-man football. The Yellowjackets' only losses were against a powerhouse Garden City team and San Marcos Academy. According to Lone Star Football Network, Robert Lee leads the all-time series 17-14-1. This will be the first matchup between the Yellowjackets and Steers since 2003 when Menard won 37-8 when they were both in the 11-man ranks. The Jackets will need to have a strong defensive effort to keep the Steers from lighting up the scoreboard again.

The pick: Robert Lee 49, Menard 35

Cherokee (5-0) at Richland Springs (4-0)

The District 16-1A Division II opener is a heavyweight showdown between No. 2 Richland Springs and No. 3 Cherokee that has the feel of a state-championship game. They both should be well rested after having open dates last week. After opening the season with back-to-back 45-point mercy-rule shutouts, Richland Springs averaged 71 points in its last two wins against Lometa and Coolidge. Cherokee are averaging 63.6 points per game and the Indians are allowing an average of 16.6. This will be by far their biggest test of the season so far against a Coyotes team that has won nine state championships and reached the state semifinals last year. Richland Springs won a shootout, 92-70, on the road against Cherokee in 2021. According to Lone Star Football Network, Richland Springs leads the all-time series 31-19-0. Cherokee's last win was in 2000.
