Summer movie guide: 15 biggest films to watch in theaters during May, June and July

1. 'Official Competition'

Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, both recent Oscar nominees for their respective roles in the Pedro Almodóvar films "Parallel Mothers" and "Pain and Glory," star in this Spanish comedy as a director and actor hired by a wealthy businessman to make a movie. Directed by "The Distinguished Citizen" filmmakers Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn, "Official Competition" premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival, where it competed for the prestigious Golden Lion and received positive reviews.

2. 'Mr. Malcolm's List'

This adaptation of the novel by Suzanne Allain (who also pens the film's screenplay) follows a woman (Freida Pinto) who is recruited by her jilted friend (Zawe Ashton) to take revenge on 19th century London's most eligible bachelor Mr. Malcolm (Sope Dirisu), who has a list of requirements for a bride. Expanded to feature length after a popular previous short film, "Mr. Malcolm's List" should sate period piece romance fans until the latest Jane Austen adaptation "Persuasion" arrives later this month.

3. 'Rubikon'

The sci-fi drama centers on a space station crew, which following a catastrophe on Earth that leaves the planet covered in a toxic fog, must decide whether to risk their lives to head home and search for survivors or stay in the station where they're safe. It's always nice to see a space-set film that's character-driven and not sheer spectacle, and "Rubikon" was picked up by IFC Films, who's been on a bit of a hot streak lately with acclaimed titles such as "Official Competition," "Happening" and "Flux Gourmet."

4. 'The Princess'

Joey King stars in this action fantasy film as a princess who won't wed a cruel suitor (Dominic Cooper), and must protect her family when the angry husband-to-not-be is intent on taking her father's throne. The film sounds like a potentially fun twist on the damsel in distress trope, and should show whether King (known for her Emmy-nominated role on the drama "The Act") has a future as an action star, with the actress also co-starring in the Brad Pitt action flick "Bullet Train" later this summer.

Henson, Michelle Yeoh and Alan Arkin, and a strangely promising soundtrack that includes the Diana Ross/Tame Impala collaboration "Turn Up the Sunshine."
