Top 6 QB prospects for the Steelers in the 2022 NFL draft

At this point, the Pittsburgh Steelers have enough 2022 NFL draft needs when they go on the clock in the first round, they really have no excuse for not drafting a guy who will help right away. One of the Steelers top draft needs is sure to be quarterback but unfortunately, this group isn’t as good at the top as recent classes.

Let’s take a closer look at the six best quarterback prospects in the upcoming draft for Pittsburgh.

1-Malik Willis, Liberty

The best combination of arm talent and athleticism in this draft is Liberty’s Malik Willis. His game reminds me a lot of Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, right down to his struggles this season. Allen was forced to lug through a round final college season due to a lack of talent around him and Willis is doing the same. Willis is only one of two quarterbacks in this draft I’d consider for the Steelers in the first round.

2-Matt Corral, Ole Miss

If you want to talk about quarterback prospects in terms of their floor and ceiling, Ole Miss’ Matt Corral is the best example in this draft of the highest ceiling and the lowest floor. Corral seems to be the type of guy who will make some plays that get you up out of your seat and others that make you bury your hands in your face. He has all the physical tools you can want in a starting quarterback, he just needs to play under control for more consistency.

3-Kenny Pickett, Pitt

There isn’t a quarterback playing better football right now in college football than Pitt’s Kenny Pickett. The biggest area of improvement for Pickett has been in his accuracy and you can see each week him improving on his touch, especially on deep throws. Pickett is something of a safe pick but in the second round would make sense.

4-Carson Strong, Nevada

Nevada’s Carson Strong is my candidate for the quarterback to climb the highest by the time the draft gets here. His style of play reminds me a lot of Zach Wilson when he was at BYU and you can just see how he carries himself with confidence and looks to elevate the play of others.

5-Sam Howell, North Carolina

At the start of the season, many pundits had North Carolina’s Sam Howell as the top prospect in the draft. But the inconsistent play has hurt his stock but the physical traits are still there. Howell is a smart guy who works well within his limitations and will need to do the same at the next level. His confidence and command of the offense is what makes him enticing to the Steelers.

6-Desmond Ridder, Cinncinati

On paper and on film, Ridder fits the mold of the modern NFL quarterback pretty well. Decent size and a quality arm but it is his ability to run the football that makes him an interesting guy to move the Steelers offense into the 21st century. Ridder is very similar to Willis in terms of the things he does well and he could be a true climber by the time the draft actually gets here.
