Tom Cruise is back in the bomber jack and shades – oh, and the fighter jet too – in the first-look trailer for Top Gun: Maverick.

Cruise himself unveiled the breathtaking footage during a surprise appearance at Comic-Con International on Thursday (July 18), giving fans a glimpse of the sequel more than 30 years in the making.

His character Captain Peter 'Maverick' Mitchell has now become a flight instructor, but the allure of the skies calls him back into action once again as a mentor to old friend Goose's son Bradley (Miles Teller).

The trailer paints a picture of Maverick as a fighter ace still hanging onto the traditions of the past, in an era where drones are increasingly used in warfare.

"You can't get a promotion, You won't retire," Ed Harris is heard telling him in the opening of the teaser. "Despite your best efforts, you refuse to die!"

Impressive action footage shows Maverick back in the skies as he manoeuvres effortlessly around rocky mountain peaks – albeit with a looming threat hanging over his head.

"The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction," he's warned by Harris's character, to which he defiantly responds: "Maybe so, sir. But not today."

During his appearance at Comic-Con on Friday, Cruise explained to those in the Paramount panel that all of the stunts in the film are "very real".

"For 34 years you guys have been very patient with me and I felt it was my responsibility for me to deliver for you," he said.
