If you’re a sports fan looking for something to do Saturday, something special will be taking place at the Alliance High School gym. The annual Top Gun Tournament, featuring the top high school wrestlers from across the country, will have its conclusion in two sessions on Saturday. The second day of competition begins with action at 9:30 a.m., and the finals begin at 4:30 p.m. The event is even more special this year, because it’s the first time in the decades-long history of Top Gun that high school girls are competing in their own division. The inaugural girls field will consist of 24 teams. Regional programs competing include Alliance, Canton South, Carrollton, Fairless, Marlington, Perry, Tuslaw and West Branch. The Rootstown girls team, which is scheduled to compete, is coached by former UFC fighter Jessica "Evil" Eye. On the boys side, the team traveling the farthest is Owings Mills High School from Maryland. Ripley High School from West Virginia also is competing. Though Owings Mills will be logging plenty of travel miles, the record for the school to travel the furthest to the Top Gun Tournament is Clovis, of California, in 2013. The ticket office opens at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and cash and credit cards will be accepted. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults. A pass for both Saturday sessions is $15 for students and $20 for adults. A finals-only pass costs $8 for students and $10 for adults.
