These are some of the top Halloween costumes in Sioux Falls this year
It's been a little bit of a slower year this year at Halloween Express, according to workers. That has been especially true for yard decorations that start around $80.
While workers say business has slowed down in comparison to previous years, recent movies like "Halloween Ends" and "Hocus Pocus 2" have inspired new costume trends.
In South Dakota, Harley Quinn has been the most popular Google search for adult costumes, according to a study by Boohoo. Quinn is the most popular Google search in 12 other states, as well. The most searched classic costume in South Dakota is a dinosaur, according to the study.
Here are some of the top-selling costumes at Halloween Express in Sioux Falls:
Adults
Michael Myers
Armed with a butcher knife and a mask, Michael Myers has been a staple of the "Halloween" series throughout (not counting the debacle of Halloween III). This year, the franchise has rolled out "Halloween Ends." The new movie has caused an uptick in customers searching for the historic white mask.
Scream
A five-film franchise that has since been adapted into a television series, the Ghostface killer is a fan favorite, and this year is no different. In January of this year, the horror-slasher franchise released "Scream." You can watch that through Showtime Anytime or Hulu.

Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn costumes have been in high demand since 2016 when "Suicide Squad" was released and Margot Robbie played the character. Since then, Robbie has played Quinn in "Birds of Prey," and most recently "The Suicide Squad." Quinn isn't going anywhere either, Lady Gaga will portray the character in "Joker: Folie à Deux" in 2024.
Hocus Pocus
"Hocus Pocus," a cult classic, was revived this year with a family-friendly sequel. That film has led to Hocus Pocus costumes flying off the shelves at Halloween Express. The film features three witches, Mary, Winifred and Sarah.
Joker
Like Harley Quinn, the Joker is a popular costume for adults as well. In 2019, "Joker" was released and played by Joaquin Phoenix, and it was a hit at the box office, grossing over $1 billion – the first R-rated movie to do so, and the sixth-highest-grossing film of the year.

Kids
Paw Patrol
Children love "Paw Patrol" so much that Chase, the dog that plays a cop, is one of Halloween Express' top items this year. Other "Paw Patrol" members include Coral, Marshall, Rex and Ryder – just to name a few.
Sonic
A new movie, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," might be behind the reason why children are seeking out Sonic costumes. The new action-adventure comedy film was released earlier this year and smashed the box office at $403.8 million. Sonic the Hedgehog started as a video game from Sega back in 1991.
Transformers
It dates back to the 1980s, but the Transformers franchise is still popular among children. There are six films in the series, with a film scheduled to be released in 2023. Transformer costumes typically are Bumblebee or Optimus Prime, but there are a number of options for children.
Top Gun
New movies are a theme throughout looking at top Halloween costumes, and this entry is no different. "Top Gun: Maverick" was a 2022 sequel to the 1986 film – grossing more than $1.4 billion.
It was the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise's storied career. Since the new film, Top Gun has been a top seller this year, according to Halloween Express.
Astronauts
Straying away from pop culture references, astronaut costumes have also been in high demand at Halloween Express. Astronaut costumes include white jumpsuits, silver suits and more. While it's a top seller among kids, astronaut outfits are also in high demand for adults.
