Top Kentucky basketball recruiting links: Robert Dillingham picks N.C. State over UK

Five-star combo guard Robert Dillingham committed to North Carolina State over a group of finalists that also included Kentucky on Wednesday.

Dillingham -- a 6-foot-2 prospect from Hickory, N.C. -- is the No. 8 overall player in the 2023 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He took an official visit to Kentucky in October, and UK was viewed as a heavy favorite over the past several weeks before N.C. State made a late run at talented in-state star and ultimately landed his commitment. He was also considering Kansas, Louisiana State and Memphis.

Even though they lost out on Dillingham, the Wildcats are expected to contend for the No. 1 recruiting class in the 2023 cycle. They already have a commitment from in-state five-star guard Reed Sheppard, they’re well-positioned in the recruitment of No. 1 overall prospect DJ Wagner (another combo guard) and they’ve extended scholarship offers to several other top-10 recruits in the class.

Dillingham, who now plays for the Kanye West-backed Donda Academy (Calif.), still has two more seasons of high school basketball. He is N.C. State’s highest-ranked commitment since Dennis Smith Jr. in 2016.
