Top marks: Where Northern Michigan schools rank on annual list
The U.S. News and World Report placed 660 Michigan schools on their list of 2022 Best High Schools.
Several schools in Northern Michigan made the top 200, including Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, Petoskey, East Jordan, Gaylord, Boyne City and Sault Ste. Marie.
The high schools were ranked on six factors based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college.
Nationally, data was gathered on nearly 24,000 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. For the recent 2022 list, nearly 18,000 schools were ranked nationally.
Best Northern Michigan high school rankings (out of 660)
Harbor Springs High School is ranked 68th within Michigan. According to U.S. News, students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at Harbor Springs High School is 45 percent. The total minority enrollment is 12 percent, and 18 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.
Harbor Springs High School, grades 9-12, ranked #2,119 in the national rankings with an overall score of 88.12/100. The school's total enrollment is 251, with a student-teacher ratio of 15:1.
Charlevoix Middle/High School is ranked 79th within Michigan. Students have the opportunity to take AP coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at Charlevoix Middle/High School is 49 percent. The total minority enrollment is 14 percent, and 36 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.
Charlevoix Middle/High School, consisting of grades 7-12, ranked #2,403 in the national rankings with an overall score of 86.53/100. The school has a total enrollment of 284 students with a 18:1 student teacher ratio.
"Charlevoix Public Schools considers the U.S. News Best High School rankings as one indicator of our district’s success," said Superintendent Mike Ritter. "I’m excited to once again see our students ranked in the top 80 high schools in Michigan, for two years in a row. In 2021, we ranked #77 and this year we ranked #79 out of 660 high schools in our state. This ranking is certainly a PK-12 effort, as it takes everyone in our district supporting our students to achieve this level of recognition. I want to congratulate our entire Rayder staff and student body for this achievement."
Petoskey High School is ranked 139th within Michigan. Students have the opportunity to take AP coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at Petoskey High School is 29 percent. The total minority enrollment is 14 percent, and 35 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.
Petoskey High School, grades 9-12, ranked #4,238 in the national rankings with an overall score of 76.25/100. Total enrollment is 984 students with a student-teacher ratio of 20:1.
East Jordan High School is ranked 148th within Michigan. Students have the opportunity to take AP coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at East Jordan High School is 38 percent. The total minority enrollment is 8 percent, and 54 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.
Including grades 7-12, the high school was #4,555 in national rankings with an overall score 74.47/100. Total enrollment is 262 with a 17:1 student-teacher ratio.
Gaylord High School/Voc. Bldg. is ranked 152nd within Michigan. Students have the opportunity to take AP coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at Gaylord High School/Voc. Bldg. is 22 percent. The total minority enrollment is 7 percent, and 47 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.
Including grades 9-12, Gaylord was #4,687 in the national rankings with an overall score of 73.73/100. Total enrollment is 961, student-teacher ratio is 20:1.
Sault Area High School is ranked 175th within Michigan. Students have the opportunity to take AP coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at Sault Area High School is 34 percent. The total minority enrollment is 42 percent, and 44 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.
Including grades 8-12, the Sault ranked #5,247 nationally with an overall score of 70.59/100. Total enrollment is 731 with a student-teacher ratio of 23:1.
Boyne City High School is ranked 185th within Michigan. Students have the opportunity to take AP coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at Boyne City High School is 19 percent. The total minority enrollment is 7 percent, and 35 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.
Including grades 8-12, Boyne City High School ranks #5,531 nationally, with an overall score of 69/100. Total enrollment is 444, student-teacher ratio is 17:1.

Michigan high school students must complete the three-part Michigan Merit Exam in 11th grade. It includes the SAT college entrance exam, the ACT Work Keys assessment, as well as online assessments via the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress in science and social studies, according to the Michigan Department of Education.
