Top Minnesota girls basketball prospect chooses South Carolina

Minnesota’s top girls basketball prospect is headed to South Carolina.

Tessa Johnson, a 5-foot-10 guard from St. Michael-Albertville, announced her commitment during a ceremony at the school later posted to Twitter. Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley, whose team won the 2022 NCAA championship in April at Target Center, tweeted, “Minnesota is the gift that keeps on giving.”

Johnson is the top-rated prospect in Minnesota, according to ESPN W’s Top 100 rankings. She chose the Gamecocks over other finalists Minnesota and Baylor. The Gophers welcome a highly ranked recruiting class this fall but have so far lost out on two local prospects for the 2023 class — Johnson and Benilde-St. Margaret’s junior Olivia Olson, who has committed to Michigan.

On her Twitter account, Johnson tweeted a photo of her in a South Carolina uniform with the message, “Catch me down south.”
