Quarterfinal matchups for San Joaquin County prep football teams were a mixture of redemption, heartbreak and domination. While Manteca rolled over Division II No. 8 Vacaville, St. Mary’s was shocked by Turlock ending its playoff run early in Division I. As championships hang in the balance for the remaining area teams, top offensive performers continued to show out throughout the playoffs.

Here are The Record’s picks for the top five offensive performers from the quarterfinals of playoffs:

1. Samson Hunkin
Quarterback, St. Mary’s (Junior)

Hunkin was locked in as the Rams battled to the last second vs. No. 7 Turlock. He opened up the game with a 20-yard touchdown pass to junior Asante Carter and would go on to throw for two more touchdowns for a total of 295 yards in the air. The 6-foot junior was the lead scorer for St. Mary’s as he tacked on a rushing touchdown as well. Despite losing in the final seconds 51-50 to the Bulldogs, Hunkin left it all out on the field in the Rams' final game of the 2022-23 season.

St. Mary’s Head Coach Tony Franks: “No question that he was a positive tonight; I mean the whole group really, we were just battling. When we needed to get the ball down the field and get some points it seemed like we’d answer and then they’d answer so it was really back and forth. It was a really good football game for offense.”

2. Ryker Peters
Running back, Escalon (Senior)

Peters and the Cougars had revenge on their mind in Friday’s match vs. Division V No. 4 Hilmar. The senior running back was a bruiser rushing for 290 yards on 24 carries and three rushing touchdowns. The last time these two teams met in the regular season, the Yellowjackets held Peters to only 57 rushing yards. This time around, he would not be denied. Peters will need another performance like this one as Escalon will face No. 1 Sutter in the semifinals.

Escalon Head Coach Andrew Beam: “When that kid is healthy he’s as good as anybody in the area. On a night when every yard was tough, I mean, he stuck his nose in there and fought for every yard. He’s got a lot of heart when he’s healthy and he can be dangerous. We are treading in the right direction at the right time.”

3. Trey Fasani
Quarterback, Ripon Christian (Senior)

The Knights dominated in its 57-0 shutout win vs. Division VII No. 8 Rio Vista and Fasani ran the show. Fasani threw for a total of three touchdowns, connecting with senior wide receivers Griffin De Abreu and Thys Van Der Hoek. The dual-threat quarterback was also a problem on the ground for the Rams as he was just one of many offensive threats in Friday’s game.

Ripon Christian Head Coach Phil Grams: “Nobody puts in more time than Trey Fasani, he's the first one at practice, the last one to leave practice, he spends the most time in the weight room so he leads by example. I think he's a next-level quarterback and I think he made every read except for one last night. We’re just super blessed to have him at the helm.”

4. Jayden McKey
Quarterback, Kimball (Senior)

McKey finished the Jaguars Division IV matchup vs. No. 5 Lincoln Fighting Zebras with two passing touchdowns as he threw for 293 yards on 19 for 30 completion. The 6-foot-1   senior played a vital role in Kimball’s 26-19 win as penalties and turnovers plagued them throughout the game. It wasn’t the cleanest win, but a win nonetheless will put McKey and the Jaguars on track to take on No. 1 Vanden on Nov. 18.

Kimball Head Coach Derek Graves: “Jayden did what he was supposed to do. He made some mistakes early on that normally he just doesn’t do and he wasn’t playing like himself but he bounced back, fought through adversity and played a great game. He bounces back and plays through adversity very well all the time. It’s all about just moving on, flushing it out and going to the next play.”

5. Bryson Davis
Running back, Manteca (Junior)

Postseason play for Manteca meant another chance to flex its muscles in the backfield. Davis was the driving force in the Buffaloes’ 42-0 win vs. Vacaville as he rushed for 160 yards on 11 carries and three touchdowns. With all eyes on senior Blake Nichelson, Davis gave the Bulldogs another problem, breaking out for scores from the 43, 24 and five-yard line. He is currently averaging close to 100 rushing yards per game so far this season.

Manteca Head Coach Mark Varnum: “He was awesome, once again you know they kind of overloaded Blake and Bryson took advantage and he popped some big runs and showed out for us. We definitely want to feed him the ball and he makes the most of any touches he gets. We hope next week he has another night like he did last night.”
