Top Performers among Erie County's spring sports athletes for final week of March

Now that the PIAA spring sports season is under way, so to is the return of GoErie.com's weekly Top Performers list between now and the end of May.

Here are some of the past week's standout efforts from Erie County high school athletes:

Baseball

Luke Costello, Cathedral Prep: The Wake Forest University recruit struck out 13 in a four-hit shutout and also hit a solo home run in an 8-0 victory against Estrella Foothills (Arizona) during the championship game of the Wolves Classic at Goodyear, Arizona.

Cole Constable, Cathedral Prep: The University of Maryland recruit totaled three hits, drove in three runs and scored two others during the Ramblers' 15-0, five-inning win over Show Low (Arizona) in the Wolves Classic.

Derick Friedman, Cathedral Prep: The freshman pitcher, in his varsity debut, struck out 11 batters over 4 1/3 innings of the Ramblers' 15-0, five-inning victory vs. St. Bernard's Academy of Eureka, California, in the Wolves Classic.

Reid Courtwright, North East: His two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning ended the Grapepickers' 3-1 victory vs. Mercyhurst Prep.

Softball

Jenna Wagner, Cathedral Prep: The St. Joseph's University recruit struck out 10 Jamestown batters, and also hit a home run during the Ramblers' 11-1, five-inning win against the Muskies at Mercyhurst University.

Alex Cozzens, North East: She was all but personally responsible for the Grapepickers' 13-1, five-inning victory over Girard when she hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and struck out five of the YellowJackets' seven batters she faced.

Taylor Polach, Fairview: She recorded three hits and four RBIs amid the Tigers' 24-4, four-inning win over Mercyhurst Prep.

Boys volleyball

Jack Wilcox, McDowell: His team-high 19 kills, plus nine assists, were vital to the Trojans' five-set victory against the Cochranton Cardinals.

Amarvir Kang, McDowell: His 19 kills and eight digs highlighted the Trojans' four-set victory vs. Mercyhurst Prep.

Eli Olszowka, Mercyhurst Prep: His six kills and 12 assists helped the Lakers sweep Cathedral Prep in three sets. ... He added 13 assists and six aces in a three-set win against Fort LeBoeuf.

Boys tennis

Jonah Ng, Cathedral Prep: Last year's District 10 Class 2A singles titlist began his sophomore season with a straight-set victory as part of the Ramblers' 5-0 shutout of Mercyhurst Prep at Westwood Racquet Club.

Boys track and field

Camden Bryant, Mercyhurst Prep: He swept the 100- and 200-meter sprint events, which also helped the Lakers beat Iroquois 82-49.

Ben Schrumpf, Fort LeBoeuf: The senior, a distance specialist for the Bison, won the 3,200 run (10 minutes, 19.49 seconds) during their 81-69 dual victory vs. Fairview.

Jamari Curlett, North East: The junior swept the sprint races (100 at 11.28 and 200 at 23.68) as part of the Grapepickers' 91-59 dual victory against Girard.

Eli Rhoades, Harbor Creek: The senior won the 800 (2:12.17) and 1,600 (4:49), and also ran the anchor leg of the Huskies' winning 1,600 relay (4:01.26) during their 120-28 dual victory against Northwestern.

Andrew Hatton, Iroquois: The senior swept the throwing events, winning the shot put (37 feet, 8¼ inches), discus (109-1) and javelin (123-10) in the Braves' dual vs. Mercyhurst Prep.

Girls track and field

Mallory Brinling, Fairview: Her throw of an even 117 feet was the farthest for the girls discus competition of Baldwin High School's South Hills Classic.

Shadae Johnson, Mercyhurst Prep: The sophomore swept the 100- and 300-meter hurdles when the Lakers edged Iroquois 66-60.

Ella Corritore, Fort LeBoeuf: She was four-time victor, including a sweep of the jumping events, when the Bison beat Fairview 94-56.

Tessa Bemiss, North East: She finished first in the shot put (29-9) and discus (103-1) when the Grapepickers beat Girard 87-58.

Chloe Yazembiak, Northwestern: The junior swept the sprints, winning the 100 (13.23), 200 (27.32) and 400 (1:11.11) during the Wildcats' dual against Harbor Creek.

Boys basketball

Tavion Spencer, Cathedral Prep: His put-back basket with 4.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter was the difference in the West's dramatic 72-70 victory over the East in the Erie County All-Star Game at Penn State Behrend's Junker Center.

Girls basketball

Lillirose Lang, Mercyhurst Prep: Her 11 points were the most for the West, which beat the East 62-33 in the Erie County All-Star Game at Penn State Behrend.
