TOP PERFORMERS: Hobbs, Castillo power Floydada boys past New Deal
NEW DEAL — Floydada boys basketball coach Eddie Walker said in the first meeting with New Deal, his team was still getting used to his style — figuring out how to play his swarming fullcourt press defense.
It's safe to say the Whirlwinds have learned.
Floydada blitzed the host Lions on Wednesday and turned a top-15 showdown into a rout. The No. 14 Whirlwinds used a 14-0 run in the opening quarter to build a comfortable cushion they rode to a 105-75 victory. It gives Floydada (25-5 overall, 7-1 district) a season sweep of No. 15 New Deal, which remains in third place behind the Winds.
Abran Castillo knocked down his sixth 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer to give Floydada a 57-36 edge. He finished with 26 points and seven 3s, and teammate Braun Hobbs scored a game-high 29.
Jason Brazell led the Lions (17-7, 5-3) with 15 points. New Deal trailed by double figures since falling behind 18-7 late in the first quarter. The Lions never got closer than 15 in the second half.
"When we played them last, it was early in the year," Walker said of Floydada's 79-78 overtime win Dec. 20. "We were still learning. They were still learning my philosophy. I just told them, 'You play hard-nose defense, you play together, you uplift each other as a team, and you'll always have a chance, no matter what.'"
