Top Performers: Record-breaking showings in basketball, swimming, bowling, top this week's list

The winter season is underway, and these players are off to red-hot starts! See which Bucks/Montco basketball players, swimmers, wrestlers and bowlers stood out from the pack last week (Dec. 10-16).

And while you're here, cast your vote for the Girls and Boys Athletes of the Week. This week's polls will be open from Tuesday at 8 p.m. to Thursday at 8 p.m.

Bowling

Star of the Week: Caleb Super, Bristol

Caleb Super's performance in Wednesday's match against Jenkintown was nothing short of super. The freshman bowled a 300 game, achieving the rare and highly coveted perfect game. Super, whose teammates call him 'Soup,' finished with a 712 high series in the 4-0 Bicentennial Athletic League sweep.

Team of the Week: Bristol

The Bristol boys bowling team is on a roll this season. The Warriors' 4-0 win against Church Farm School was one for the record books. The team rolled a combined 1082, breaking the school's single-game record. Evan Cronon bowled a 285 high game en route to a 737 high series. Liam Feeney contributed a 708 series, Declan DeLong tallied a 580 series and Dillon Samuels rolled a 550 series. The Warriors then swept Jenkintown in their next match, led by Caleb Super's 712 high series and a 300 game. DeLong bowled a 653 series Feeney had a 651 in the win.

Girls Basketball

*Record Alert!* Cire Worley, Abington: Worley was out-of-this-world in the Ghosts’ 78-76 win over Albertus Magnus, a top-ranked team from New York. Worley erupted for 38 points, including a team record nine 3-pointers.

Carolyn Sipprell, Quakertown: Sipprell scored 18 points in the Panthers’ 61-18 victory over Upper Perkiomen on Monday. On Friday, Sipprell exploded for 27 points and 13 rebounds in a 54-44 win over Wissahickon.

Delaney McCaffrey, Council Rock North: McCaffrey had a big first half, scoring seven points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer and two steals, to give the CR North a 26-12 halftime lead over St. Hubert’s. McCaffrey finished with 14 points in the 50-28 win.

Kathryn O’Kane, Council Rock South: O’Kane’s team-high 12 points secured the Golden Hawks’ 40-30 victory in Friday’s rivalry game against CR North.

*Record Alert!* Liliana Metrick, Council Rock South: The sophomore guard sank seven 3-pointers, good for a school record, on her way to 25 points in the Golden Hawks 77-50 win over Audenried at the Cream of the Crop Showcase. Metrick was named tournament MVP.

Mya Aizen, Conwell-Egan: Aizen led the way with 17 and nine rebounds, both game-highs, in the Eagles' 59-49 victory over Nazareth Academy.

H.S. wrestling: H.S. wrestling: When are the big matches? And what are the top stories for the new season?

Kyliyah Carmichael, Conwell-Egan: Carmichael tallied 12 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals in a 60-37 win over Freire Charter at the Germantown Academy Make-A-Wish Showcase.

Bailey Balkir, Gwynedd Mercy: The Monarchs freshman has made quite an early impact. In Monday’s win over Merion Mercy, Balkir had a team-high 15 points. She contributed eight points in Saturday’s 44-26 victory over Springside-Chestnut Hill.

Casey Harter, Souderton: Harter erupted for 27 points to lead Souderton to a win over North Penn. The Northwestern commit scored 21 of her points in the second half to help the Big Red pull away for the 64-52 victory.

Tai Henkels, CB West: Henkels posted 19 points to lead the Bucks to a 50-35 win over rival CB South. Henkels scored eight of her points in the first half, helping the Bucks to a 20-10 halftime lead.

Gabby Casey, Lansdale Catholic: The senior St. Joe’s commit put up a dazzling performance against a very good Pennsbury team in the weekend’s Keystone Classic tournament. Casey scored 27 points for the Crusaders on the way to a 58-38 victory.

Taylor Gurysh, Neshaminy: Gurysh scored eight consecutive points to open the second quarter of Neshaminy’s game against Lansdale Catholic. The Kutztown commit scored 10 of her 17 points in the second, as Neshaminy outscored LC 19-5 on the way to a 52-39 win.

Boys Basketball

Jeremiah Lee, Abington: Lee’s offensive output clinched the win for Abington against Upper Dublin on Friday night. Lee led the way with 25 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and a block. Lee scored 12 of his points in the second quarter, when the Ghosts outscored UD 25-11.

Justin DiRoberto, CB East: DiRoberto was the hero in an early rivalry game between the Patriots and CB South. DiRoberto grabbed an offensive board, scored on the play, and hit the ensuing free throw to clinch the 61-58 win for the Patriots with eight seconds to go in a tie game. DiRoberto, who also hit a 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter, finished with eight points.

Tyler Meinel, CB South: With two seconds remaining and his team trailing by two, Meinel sank two clutch free throws to send the game against rival CB West to OT. Meinel finished with a team-high 22 points, as the Titans pulled away in OT for their first victory of the season, 57-48.

An unimaginable loss: Council Rock North boys basketball team: 'This season's for (coach Jesse Krasna)'

Jacob Cummiskey, CB East: Cummiskey led the way with 22 points, including 6 for 6 at the free throw line, and six rebounds as the Patriots topped Pennridge 61-46 for their sixth straight win to open the season.

Adam Mahtat, Council Rock North: Mahtat scored a game-high 16 points to lead the CR North to a win over rival CR South 48-36 on Friday.

Ryan Deininger, North Penn: Deininger poured in 23 points to lead the Knights to their third straight win to start the season with a 65-56 victory over CB West.

Nate Townsend, Neshaminy: Townsend dropped 25 points, along with eight rebounds, to help Neshaminy edge Norristown 58-56.

Bryce Rollerson, Germantown Academy: Rollerson scored a game-high 25 points in the Patriots’ overtime loss to Pennington School on Monday. On Friday, he led the way with 26 points in a 74-56 win over Academy of Palumbo in the 25th Annual Jim Fenerty Make-a-Wish Tournament. Rollerson has six 20-point games this season in six games so far, including Saturday’s 24-point performance in a 43-42 loss to Shipley.

Joey Zack, Neshaminy: In the closing seconds of a one-possession game, Zack blocked the would-be game-tying layup to secure the 58-56 win over Norristown. Zack had 10 rebounds, five points and three blocks.

Sean Curley, Neshaminy: He scored 15 of his team-high 18 points in the second half, with three 3-pointers. Curley also went 4 for 4 from the line in Neshaminy’s 44-39 comeback victory over CR South in which Neshaminy outscored CR South 16-2 in the fourth quarter. Curley again led Neshaminy with a game-high 16 points in Friday’s win over Truman.

Ty Kocak, Pennsbury: Kocak tallied 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Falcons to a convincing win over Truman on Tuesday.

Miles Longacre, Quakertown: Longacre’s huge outing earned the Panthers their first win of the season on Friday. Longacre had 24 points and nine rebounds, both game-highs, in a 64-49 victory over Wissahickon.

Michael Green, Archbishop Wood: Michael Green came off the bench to launch an improbable comeback for Archbishop Wood against North Catholic in the Diane Mosco Foundation Shootout. The sophomore scored eight of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, which began with the Vikings trailing by eight points. Green opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, one of his three. Late in the quarter, Green hit another 3-pointer and sank a pair of free throws to help secure the Vikings' 78-69 win.

Jalil Bethea, Archbishop Wood: Bethea had 23 points, including four 3-pointers, in the Vikings' loss to Penn Charter (88-79). In the Vikings' comeback win against North Catholic, Bethea scored seven points in the fourth quarter, on his way to 13 for the game, including a game-tying 3-pointer.

Christian Bliss, George School: Bliss scored 14 points in the second half en route to a game-high 19 points, as the Cougars toppled Phelps School 70-63.

Jeremiah Lee, Abington: Lee led the way with 23 points and three steals to secure the Ghosts first win of the season, a 56-49 victory over rival Hatboro-Horsham. He led the Ghosts to their second win on Friday, netting a game-high 25 points against Upper Dublin.

Eric Gonzalez, Bensalem: Gonzalez posted a team-leading 18 points to help the Owls edge Pennsbury, 49-46, and improve to 5-0 on the season.

George Marion, William Tennent: Marion netted 20 points as the Panthers scored 46 in the second half en route to an 80-63 win over Upper Moreland.

Girls Swimming

*Record Alert!* Taylor Grimley, Germantown Academy: The Patriots junior set a school record in the 100 butterfly in a meet against Penn Charter. Grimley won the race with a time of 54.08, which easily broke the school record she had just set last season (54.97) in the event.

*Record Alert!* Emily Hamill, Germantown Academy: Hamill won four events for the Patriots, in a 105-78 win over Penn Charter. Hamill took first place in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, and the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Both relay teams set new pool records at GA.

Annie Jia, Hatboro-Horsham: The sophomore won the 100 butterfly at the Cardinal Classic, clocking in at 54.15.

Sarah Parker, Hatboro-Horsham: Parker won two individual events as Hatboro-Horsham battled host Upper Dublin in the Cardinal Classic. Parker won the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.33, and was first in the 100 freestyle at 53.33. The Hatters dominated the meet, winning six events, with the Cardinals winning three.

Kathy Jia, Hatboro-Horsham: Jia took first place in the 200 IM at the Upper Dublin Cardinal Classic on Saturday with a time of 2:07.17.

Boys Swimming

*Record Alert!* Mikko Kuittinen, George School: The Cougars freshman had a record-breaking day at Tuesday’s meet against Abington Friends and Westtown. Kuittinen won the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.52, establishing a school record in the event, in just his second high school meet.

Robbie Ferlick, Souderton: Ferlick was a three-time winner in Souderton’s victory over Pennsbury in Tuesday’s dual meet. Ferlick took first place in the 200 freestyle with a time of  1:47.48, as well as the 100 butterfly in 53.36, and he led off the Big Red’s first-place 200 freestyle relay.

Indoor Track & Field

*Record Alert!* Brian DiCola, Hatboro-Horsham: The Hatters senior and Penn State commit added another record to his resume at the Track & Field Coaches Association of Greater Philadelphia meet at Lehigh University on Saturday. DiCola won the boys' 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:30.14, setting a meet record. DiCola’s performance ranks as the sixth-fastest indoor 3K time by a high schooler in Pennsylvania state history.

Fidelis Osunkwo, Harry S. Truman: The Tigers junior finished second in the boys' 400-meter dash, a race that featured 173 competitors, at the Coaches Hall of Fame Invitational at the Armory in New York City.

Eliazar Mercado, Harry S. Truman: Mercado took third place in the boys shot put finals at the Coaches Hall of Fame Invitational with a throw of 42-5.75.

Anthony Collins, Harry S. Truman: The Tigers senior finished second in the boys 55 meter hurdles at the Coaches Hall of Fame Invitational with a time of 7.52. The time set a personal best for Collins, and currently ranks as the third best time in the US, according to PennTrack XC.

Jared Hess, Pennridge: The senior took first place in the boys triple jump at the TFCA of GP meet on Saturday. Hess’ jump of 45-5.25 is the best in Pennsylvania, according to PennTrackXC.

Gwen Hamilton, Archbishop Wood: The Vikings’ freshman phenom took first place in the girls' 800-meter run at the Delaware Valley Girls' Track Coaches' Association meet on Saturday in Reading. Hamilton clocked in at 2:18.84.

Emily Simko, Hatboro-Horsham: Simko raced to a second-place finish in the girls' mile run at the DVGTCA meet  with a time of 5:17.23.

Taylor Forbes, North Penn: Forbes was the girls triple-jump champion of the DVGTCA meet, thanks to an excellent jump of 36-6.25.

Wrestling

Dual Meet of the Week: Council Rock South vs. Quakertown

Wednesday’s match between the top-ranked CR South and Quakertown was as good as advertised.  The Golden Eagles’ had pins from Ben Brillhart (139 pounds) and Bekhruz Sadriddinov (189) en route to a 32-26 victory. The Panthers had standout performances from Calvin Lachman (215) and Collin Gaj (145). Lachman pinned his opponent in 55 seconds, while Gaj record a pin in 1:10.

Collin Gaj, Quakertown: Gaj took first place in the 145-pound bracket at the X-Calibur tournament. Gaj won his championship finals match by a 5-2 decision. Gaj had two pins and a victory by technical fall on his way to the finals.

Cole Coffin, Pennridge: Coffin (121 pounds) pinned his opponent in under a minute (59 seconds), helping Pennridge edge Neshaminy 41-28 in Wednesday’s dual meet.

John Haubert, Palisades: At Saturday’s Howdy Duncan Invitational, Haubert won five matches and ended the day as the 138-pound champion. Haubert had two pins and won the championship match by major decision (10-1).

Danny Haubert, Palisades: Haubert earned a 5-3 decision in the championship finals at Saturday’s Howdy Duncan Invitational. Haubert had wins by fall, technical fall and major decision en route to his championship at 175 pounds.

Faith Christian wrestling: The Lions wrestlers came up big against CR North, winning 64-5 in a dual meet. Of the Lions’ 12 wins, six were by falls. Gauge Botero (121 pounds), Mason Wagner (133), Arment Waltenbaugh (139), Chase Hontz (145) and Adam Waters (189) all won by fall, with Hontz pinning his opponent in 1:40.

The Lions continued to dominate at the highly competitive Beast of the East Tournament this weekend. Gauge Botero took third place in the 120-pound bracket, Chase Hontz (138 pounds) and Max Stein (144 pounds) both earned fifth-place finishes, and Adam Waters claimed third place in the 175-pound bracket. The Lions finished third in the tournament with 150 points.

Council Rock North wrestlers stand out at X-Calibur

CR North had several wrestlers on the podium at the close of the X-Calibur tournament in Wilkes-Barre this weekend. Marco Loss received a 6-4 decision in his finals bout to win the 114-pound bracket, and Eren Sement earned a 3-2 decision to take first place in the 127-pound championship finals.

Pierce Kane took second place in the 121-pound bracket, and Alexander Diz (107) also earned a second-place finish.
