Top Performers: See which players had star turns last week in the regular season & PCL playoffs

Last week marked the end of the regular season, and these student-athletes had plenty to play for. Whether they were playing in the final game of their high school career or trying to secure a postseason berth, these players gave it all they had.

And over in the Philadelphia Catholic League, the playoffs are already underway, complete with upsets and dramatic finishes!

Volleyball

Team of the Week: Germantown Academy

The Patriots clinched the Inter-Academic League title for the first time since 2009. With wins against Notre Dame and Springside-Chestnut Hill last week, the Patriots improved to a perfect 7-0 in league play. In the sweep of SCH, sophomore Caroline Smith had 10 kills, sophomore Liv Reynolds posted five aces, and junior Angie Wang recorded six digs.

Katie Monaghan, Central Bucks East

The Patriots’ senior setter reached a major milestone on Monday night, when she recorded her 1,000th career assist in a 3-0 sweep of Villa Joseph Marie. Monaghan, who had 993 assists to start the day, reached the milestone in the second set, resulting in an enthusiastic celebration by her teammates. Monaghan also contributed 11 digs and two aces in the victory.

Edan Kauer, Nala Kauer, Council Rock South

The sisters put on a show at the net in the Golden Hawks' win over William Tennent. Edan tallied 10 kills, seven digs and three aces, while Nala posted eight kills, six digs and five aces.

Ainsley Jordan, Council Rock North

In CR North’s last home game, Jordan, a senior, posted 15 kills, four blocks and two aces in a 3-0 sweep of Truman. The Indians finished just outside of a playoff berth.

Breckyn Loynd, Julia Daniele, Central Bucks South

Titans’ senior outside hitter Loynd tallied 23 kills and 22 digs to lead a comeback effort after falling behind 0-2. Senior libero Daniele powered the defense with 21 digs, along with five aces and one kill, as the Titans won three straight sets to pull out the 3-2 victory against Souderton in 4-16 CB South’s final match of the season.

Field Hockey playoffs: Conwell-Egan's McCormick, Beishl waited four years for this moment

Bailey McCormick, Cowell-Egan

McComick scored twice in Conwell-Egan’s first playoff game in 16 years, giving the Eagles a 3-2 victory over fourth-seeded Archbishop Wood in the PCL quarterfinal game. On Friday, McCormick was named first team All-Catholic.

The fifth-seeded Eagles will play No. 2 Archbishop Carroll in the semifinals on Monday. Carroll won 9-0 in the team’s regular season meeting.

Kylee Hager, Council Rock South

Hager reached a lofty milestone in Tuesday’s win over Harry S. Truman. Hager scored her 100th career point in the game, accomplishing the feat as a junior. Hager scored three goals and had one assist in the game. The Golden Hawks finished the regular season 11-6-1 and await the postseason.

McKenzie Newcomb, Bristol

Newcomb scored the game-winning goal in a defensive battle that gave the Warriors a 1-0 victory over Delco Christian. The win halted a four-game losing streak as the Warriors improved to 7-10-1 after starting the season 1-5-1.

Carla Guy, Bristol

The Warriors’ goalie shutout Delco Christian to secure a 1-0 win for the Warriors.

Field Hockey: Field Hockey: Pennridge's Payton Muth stars on the field now, but plans to be on the sidelines later

Mia Popovich, Pennsbury

Popovich scored the lone goal in an important game with playoff implications. Popovich netted the game-winner in the first quarter against CR North, and the 1-0 victory bumped the Falcons to 29th in the District One playoffs with one game to go.

Jordan Vradenburgh, Pennsbury

The Falcons’ goalie issued a shutout to secure the 1-0 win over CR North.

Kendra Pitts, Central Bucks West

The Bucks’ freshman goalie was at the top of her game against 16-1 Souderton on Tuesday. Pitts not only recorded 13 saves but also shut out the high-powered Indians, marking the first time Souderton was held scoreless this season.

Bella Schute, Central Bucks South

In a game with huge implications in the District One standings, Schute scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 overtime victory against Pennridge. The win moved CB South to 24th in the power rankings.

Caroline Suko, Central Bucks East

Suko scored the game-winning goal in overtime, concluding the Patriots’ season with an emotional 3-2 victory over North Penn. The Titans finished the season 8-9-1.

Maddie Gregory, Charlotte Elwell, Hatboro-Horsham

The Hatters’ seniors scored two games apiece in their final high school game, leading Hatboro-Horsham to a 7-1 win over Cheltenham. The Hatters finished with a 3-15 record.

Girls Soccer

Mya Aizen, Conwell-Egan

Two minutes into the PCL quarterfinal game, Aizen scored from 30 yards out giving the Eagles an early lead that would hold until the end. The Eagles will play top-seeded Archbishop Wood in Tuesday’s semifinal.

Faith Sullivan, Addison Holmes, Villa Joseph Marie

Sullivan, a junior, and Holmes, a freshman, each scored a goal in the Jems’ 2-0 win against rival Mount St. Joseph. Sullivan leads the team in scoring with seven goals and six assists.

Makenzie Van Arsdale, Villa Joseph Marie

The Jems’ goalie was unflappable in the final game of the season in a game that went to double overtime. Van Arsdale recorded a shutout against Villa Maria Academy, a team that had defeated the Jems 4-0 earlier in the season. Van Arsdale had multiple saves, including one on a penalty kick in the final minute of the second OT period, to secure the 0-0 tie. The Jems finished the season with two wins and a tie in their last three outings.

Piper McGinley, Abington

McGinley scored a pair of two goals, assisted on two more, and even contributed to an own goal in the Ghosts’ 6-1 win over Wissahickon.

Lauren Green, Archbishop Wood

The Vikings’ goalie issued her seventh shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over Archbishop Carroll to conclude the regular season with a perfect 8-0 PCL record.

Billinda Leisner, Dock Mennonite

Leisner scored twice in the first half to lead the Pioneers to a 3-1 win over Bicentennial Athletic League opponent Delco Christian.

Cam Williams, Central Bucks East

Williams had two goals and an assist in the Patriots’ 5-0 win against Souderton, giving her 13 goals and 12 assists for the regular season.

Boys Soccer

Tyler Schmidt, Conwell-Egan

In the PCL quarterfinal game, Schmidt scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory against Archbishop Wood to send the Eagles to the semifinals against Father Judge.

Tommy Regan, Drew Lottier, La Salle

Regan scored an early goal to give the Explorers the lead over Lansdale Catholic in the PCL quarterfinal game. Lottier scored before halftime for a 2-0 lead, and that goal would turn out to be the game-winner as Lansdale Catholic scored in the second half. La Salle advanced to the semifinals, where it will play Archbishop Ryan on Tuesday.

Thijs Popma, Central Bucks South

In a matchup between the two top teams in the SOL Colonial, Pompa converted a penalty kick that gave CB South a 1-0 win over Pennridge and the conference title.

Joe Joe Maxwell, Neshaminy

Maxwell had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 victory over Bensalem. The win moved Neshaminy up to 22nd in the District One rankings.

Collin Meo, Bensalem

In his last high school game, Meo scored the final goal of the Owls’ season, and also had an assist, in a 3-0 win against Truman. Bensalem finished with a 3-13-1 record.

Cross Country

Aidan Kerns, James Kuduk, Aiden Maue, Souderton

Souderton runners took the top three spots in the SOL Colonial Division Championships. Kerns won the boys varsity race with a time of 16:02.40, followed by Kuduk in second place (16:04.50) and Maue in third (16:06.40).

Brian DiCola, Hatboro-Horsham

DiCola took home gold in the SOL Liberty Championships. DiCola crossed the finish line of the boys varsity race at 15:39.40.

Jack Czarnecki, Council Rock North

The senior won the SOL Patriot Championship, racing to a 15:53.70 time in the boys varsity race.

Lilly DiCola, Emily Simko, Hatboro-Horsham 

The Hatters’ teammates finished first and second in the SOL Liberty Championships. DiCola, a sophomore, won the girls varsity race with a time of 18:12.90, with Simko close behind at 18:17.90 for second place.

Ashley Landis, Pennridge

The Rams’ sophomore was first in the SOL Colonial Division girls varsity championship race with a time of 18:46.40.

Bailey Gassmann, Council Rock South

Gassmann took first place in the SOL Patriot Championships with a time of 18:37.70 in the girls varsity race.

Gwen Hamilton, Archbishop Wood

The Vikings freshman has won every PCL meet she’s raced in this season, and that now includes the Catholic League Championship. Hamilton raced to the finish line with a time of 20:47.04, finishing over a full minute ahead of the second-place finisher.

Drew Brill, Cole Casadei, Ryan McGinley, La Salle

The Explorers’ senior took home gold in the PCL Championship, finishing with a time of 16:14.36. Casadei (16:31.71) finished second and McGinley was third (16:37.82). The three also helped the Explorers secure their seventh straight team title.

Meredith Glunz, Villa Joseph Marie

Glunz ended up fourth in the AACA Cross Country Championship, crossing the finish line at 21:57.

Sarah Hock, Gwynedd Mercy

The Monarchs’ freshman finished fifth in the AACA Cross Country Championship with a time of  22:10.

Margaret Massengill, George School

The Cougars’ freshman raced to a fifth-place finish in the Friends Schools League Championships with a time of 22:18.13 in the girls varsity race.
