Top-ranked OU men's golf team holds off second-ranked Oklahoma State to win Big 12 championship

Top-ranked Oklahoma shot 6-under par as a team Wednesday and came back to win the Big 12 Men's Golf Championships at Whispering Pines in Trinity, Texas.

The Sooners, who recovered from a four-stroke deficit over the last four holes, beat No. 2 Oklahoma State by two strokes, 850-852, in the team scoring. Texas, which entered the final 18 holes in first place, finished third with an 853.

Chris Gotterup of OU finished second in the medalist race, two strokes behind champion Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech. Aberg finished the tournament with an 8-under 208. But the big highlights came from Gotterup, Logan McAllister and Drew Goodman who keyed the Sooners' late rally with clutch birdies.

McAllister tied for sixth place with a 3-under 213. Goodman, a freshman, finished in a tie for 11th, although he finished with a 1-under par 215 for the 54-hole event.

"Today was absolutely an emotional roller coaster," OU coach Ryan Hybl said after the Sooners won their 18th conference title. "We had the best start we could ever ask for, which allowed us to get out in front."

OU had six birdies on its first three holes Wednesday to overtake Texas and keep OSU at bay. The Longhorns caught fire on the back nine but failed to sink a birdie after the 14th hole.

The tournament went down to the wire, before Gotterup, McAllister and Goodman delivered.

"All of our guys did an amazing job this week and gave us a chance today, and we seized the moment." Hybl said.

Bo Jin was Oklahoma State's top finisher with a 5-under 211. He finished in a third-place tie with Texas' Cole Hammer.
