Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has named five Republicans to sit on a special House committee tasked with investigating the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.

GOP aides confirmed McCarthy, a California Republican, appointed Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana to serve as the top GOP lawmaker on the panel alongside Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio; Rodney Davis of Illinois; Troy Nehls of Texas; and Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota.

Banks chairs the conservative Republican Study Committee. Nehls is the former sheriff of Fort Bend County, Texas. Jordan is the top Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Davis is the top GOP lawmaker on the House Administration Committee.

The panel includes eight lawmakers appointed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat. Seven are Democrats, and one is Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming.

Republicans view the committee as a partisan panel that could use the investigation as a political weapon against the GOP heading into the 2022 midterm elections.

Cheney is a staunch foe of former President Donald Trump and blames him for inciting the riot.

The special panel will meet for the first time next week and hold a hearing featuring four police officers who will testify about the riot and the impact on their lives.
