Top scholars: Local students receive college scholarships for 2022-23 and beyond

MUNCIE, Ind. — As the 2021-22 school year began winding down, local high school and college students were getting scholarships for the next academic year.

The Muncie branch of the American Association of University Women awarded three $1,500 scholarships to Ivy Tech Community College students Kami Fulkerson and Carrie Hopper and to Ball State University student Dawnya Mercado. Fulkerson is working toward an undergraduate degree in special education. Hopper is working toward an associate degree in cyber security. Dawnya Mercado is working toward a master’s degree in social work.

Delaware County students preparing to become teachers are among this year's recipients of the state's Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship. The scholarship program awards $7,500 per year to 200 high-achieving students who commit to teaching in Indiana for a minimum of five years after graduating college. Local recipients are: Analiese Pittman, Yorktown High School; Emily McClure, Burris Laboratory School; Ellie Lynn, Yorktown High School; Emma Johnson, Cowan Junior-Senior High School; Kearston West; Cowan Junior-Senior High School, and Nathaniel Kirby, Cowan Junior-Senior High School.

The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County announced recipients of some of the scholarships it administers:

Wyatt Bilby, a senior at Delta High School, is the recipient of the Murray's Jewelers Scholarship. He plans to study construction management and real estate at Purdue University. He is the son of Seth Bilby.

Kaydence Jean Brewer, a senior at Wapahani High School, is the recipient of the Sue Harris Unsung Hero Scholarship. She plans to study human life sciences at Indiana University East. She is the daughter of Joanna Brewer and Brian Brewer.

Lydia Evans, a senior at Cowan Junior-Senior High School, is the recipient of the Muncie Elks Lodge 245 / H. Wayne Standerford Scholarship. She plans to study audiology at Ball State University. She is the daughter of Cindy Evans and Keith Evans.

Audrea Haynes, a senior at Wes-Del High School, is the recipient of the Sarah E. Adams Scholarship. She plans to study sports management at Taylor University. She is the daughter of Jerry Haynes and Shelley Williamson.

Javin Kile, a senior at Delta High School, is the recipient of the Delta Eagles Wrestling Scholarship. He plans to study biology at Hanover College. He is the son of Jen Joslin and Greg Kile.

Trey Michael Mathews, a senior at Muncie Central High School, is the recipient of the Jerry Parrish Scholarship, the Ross Family Autism Scholarship, and the Lathrop P. Johnson Scholarship. He plans to study Spanish education and mathematics at Ball State University. He is the son of Stephanie Joseph.

Aidan Pierce, a senior at Delta High School, is the recipient of the Charles W. and Jane (Klipsch) Thomas Scholarship. He plans to study mechanical engineering at Purdue University. He is the son of Tony and Jenifer Pierce.

Mallory Schwer, a senior at Delta High School, is the recipient of the Delaware Community Schools Memorial Scholarship. She plans to study brain and behavioral sciences at Purdue University. She is the daughter of Jeff and Teresa Schwer.

Grace Bond, a student at Ball State University, is a recipient of the Janice Paige Hughes Scholarship. Bond is studying special education.

Grace Huisman, a senior at Yorktown High School, is a recipient of the Robbin S. Lindsey Memorial Scholarship, the Robert and Wanda McKibben Scholarship and the Dr. William J. and Thelma V. McNabney Memorial Scholarship. She plans to study exercise science at Trine. She is the daughter of Leo and Jennifer Huisman.

Tahellah Jacox, a senior at Muncie Central High School, is a recipient of the Arthur D. and Josephine M. Robling Scholarship. She plans to attend Ball State University. She is the daughter of Vanessa and Phil Jacox.

Olivia Keesling, a senior at Randolph Southern Junior-Senior High School, is the recipient of the E.K. Keesling Memorial Scholarship. She plans to study kinesiology, nutrition, and dietetics at Purdue University. She is the daughter of Brad and Lisa Keesling.

Jaci Knott, a senior at Wes-Del High School, is a recipient of the Arthur D. and Josephine M. Robling Scholarship. She plans to study psychology at Purdue University. She is the daughter of Addie Rooker and Josh Knott.

Analiese Pittman, a senior at Yorktown High School, is a recipient of the Arthur D. and Josephine M. Robling Scholarship. She plans to study elementary education at Ball State University. She is the daughter of Stanley and Laura Pittman.

Kevin Robinson, a senior at Wapahani High School, is the recipient of the Ashley Burgauer Scholarship and the Arthur D. and Josephine M. Robling Scholarship. He plans to study nursing at Ball State University. He is the son of Kenneth and Michele Robinson.

Kearston West, a senior at Cowan Junior-Senior High School, is a recipient of the Gary W. Addison Scholarship and the Arthur D. and Josephine M. Robling Scholarship. She plans to study science education at Purdue University. She is the daughter of Kyle West and Tiara Hicks.
