Top Somerset County basketball, rifle, swimming and wrestling performers for Jan. 2-5

Athlete of the Week

Conemaugh Township rifle team member Sierra LaPorta was voted Daily American Somerset County Female Athlete of the Week while North Star basketball player Ethan Smith earned Male Athlete of the Week honors for their efforts Dec. 16-30.

In two rifle match victories, LaPorta fired a 278 and 268 to pace the team.

Meanwhile, in four games, Smith combined for 50 points, 35 rebounds, 22 assists and 19 steals.

Thursday

Boys basketball

Windber 57, Conemaugh Township 51: In Davidsville, John Shuster scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter as Windber roared back to take down Conemaugh Township.

Grady Klosky tallied 15 points for the Ramblers. Evan Brady recorded 10 points and eight rebounds while Blake Klosky contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

Tanner Shirley paced Conemaugh Township with a game-high 17 points. Declan Mainhart scored 11 points and Jon Updyke added 10.

Girls basketball

Berlin Brothersvalley 53, Allegany 37: In Berlin, Grace Sechler scored a game-high 16 points as the Mountaineers cruised to a non-conference victory.

Ashley Brant tallied 14 points, including four three pointers, and Jenny Countryman added 12 points for Berlin.

Windber 47, Conemaugh Township 26: In Davidsville, Lexie James scored a game-high 19 points to go along with nine rebounds, vaulting Windber past Conemaugh Township.

Harmony Jablon added eight points and Rylee Ott contributed seven rebounds and five steals for Windber.

Mya Poznanski netted 14 points while Ava Byer and Emilee Roman each pulled down seven rebounds for Conemaugh Township.

North Star 47, Conemaugh Valley 31: In Boswell, Grace Metz recorded a game-high 18 points to propel the Cougars past the Blue Jays.

Abby Barnick added 14 points and Chloe Miller grabbed 12 rebounds for North Star.

Shade 75, Rockwood 48: In Cairnbrook, Jenna Muha poured in a game-high 42 points to go along with 22 rebounds, nine steals and four assists as the Panthers pummeled the Rockets.

Hailee Chapman produced 16 points and five steals for Shade.

Mollie Wheatley led Rockwood with 20 points.

Rifle

Conemaugh Township 1,309, Rockwood 1,216: Sierra LaPorta shot a personal best 283 to guide Conemaugh Township past Rockwood.

Noah Lehman fired a 269 and Mea Rouser shot a personal best 250 for Conemaugh Township.

Isaiah Brumbaugh led Rockwood with a 259.

North Star 1,260, Berlin Brothersvalley 1,238: Nicole Rininger fired a 273 to help the Cougars past the Mountaineers.

Aidan Barnick shot a 254 and Colton Snyder fired a personal best 236 for North Star.

Dalton Maust led Berlin with a 265. Sami Hayman added a 254.

Wrestling

Chestnut Ridge 63, Somerset 12: In Somerset, the Golden Eagles were grounded by the Lions.

Rowan Holmes and Zane Hagans picked up falls for Somerset.

Boys basketball

North Star 66, Ferndale 25: In Boswell, Brady Weimer tallied a game-high 17 points as the Cougars romped the Yellow Jackets.

Andy Retassie recorded 12 points and six assists for North Star. CJ Biery had 12 points while Ethan Eller contributed seven points and eight rebounds.

Rockwood 68, Meyersdale 55: In Rockwood, Josiah Rock produced 19 points as the Rockets upended the Red Raiders.

Will Latuch netted 17 points for Rockwood. Christian Schrock contributed 14 points and Dalton Boden added 10 points.

Lance Aldinger led Meyersdale with 18 points and Braden Kretchman added 17 points.

Bedford 78, Somerset 53: In Somerset, Kevin Ressler delivered 28 points as the Bisons downed the Golden Eagles.

Eli Mumau led Somerset with 14 points. Caleb Platt and Aiden VanLenten each added 12 points.

Turkeyfoot 48, Shanksville-Stonycreek 39: In Confluence, Chris Kozlowski recorded 16 points to go along with 14 rebounds as the Rams topped the Vikings.

Bryce Nicholson tallied 16 points and six steals for Turkeyfoot.

Christian Musser dropped 22 points and Logan McCall added 10 for Shanksville.

Conemaugh Township 61, Conemaugh Valley 51: In East Taylor Township, Declan Mainhart delivered a game-high 21 points to vault Conemaugh Township past Conemaugh Valley.

Jon Updyke netted 15 points and Alex Gregory added 10 for Conemaugh Township.

Girls basketball

Somerset 52, Bedford 24: In Bedford, Eve Housley poured in a game-high 20 points as the Golden Eagles trounced the Bisons.

Shawna Walker added seven points for Somerset.

Swimming

Somerset sweeps Hollidaysburg: In Somerset, the Golden Eagles picked up two victories over the Golden Tigers.

The Somerset girls edged Hollidaysburg 86-84 while the boys picked up an 88-69 triumph.

Carly Richard (100 and 200 free), Hope Miller (50 free) and Alyssa Richard (100 fly) picked up individual wins for the Somerset girls.

Emert Rugg (200 free and 100 fly), Simon McGuire (50 free and 100 free) and Zach Gibbs (100 breast) earned individual wins for the Somerset boys.

Boys basketball

Windber 73, Portage 64 (OT): In Windber, Blake Klosky recorded a game-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds, propelling the Ramblers past the Mustangs in overtime.

John Shuster and Grady Klosky each netted 15 points for Windber. Tanner Barkley chipped in 10 points.

Andrew Miko and Bode Layo each scored 12 points for Portage.

Berlin Brothersvalley 73, Penns Manor 38: In Berlin, Craig Jarvis dropped a game-high 24 points to vault the Mountaineers past the Comets.

Ryan Blubaugh racked up 21 points and Pace Prosser contributed 12 points for Berlin.

Girls basketball

North Star 45, Ferndale 38: In Boswell, Abby Barnick scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Cougars past the Yellow Jackets.

Grace Metz netted 15 points and Chloe Miller pulled down 10 rebounds for North Star.

Angelina Miller scored 14 points for Ferndale.

Conemaugh Township 50, Conemaugh Valley 20: In East Taylor Township, Jenna Brenneman poured in a game-high 16 points to go along with 13 rebounds as Conemaugh Township rolled past Conemaugh Valley.

Katie Wiley had seven points and six rebounds while Ava Byer tallied seven points, five rebounds, five assists and four blocks for Conemaugh Township.

Meyersdale 57, Rockwood 40: In Rockwood, Marcella Dupre dropped a game-high 17 points as the Red Raiders romped the Rockets.

Zoe Hetz and Amelia Kretchman each scored 11 points for Meyersdale.

Izzy Haer delivered a team-high 12 points while Morgan Beckner added nine for Rockwood.

Rifle

Berlin Brothersvalley 1,243, Shanksville-Stonycreek 1,080: Dalton Maust shot a personal best 269 to lead the Mountaineers past the Vikings.

Sami Hayman (254), Memphis Bement (237) and Lukas Coughenour (232) all shot personal bests for Berlin.

Trinity Blough fired a personal best 256 for Shanksville. Abby Lasure (216) and Kyleia Lasure (195) also shot personal bests.

North Star 1,312, Rockwood 1,231: Nicole Rininger fired a 274 to guide the Cougars past the Rockets.

Hayden Kobuck (265) and Aidan Barnick (262) rounded out the top three for North Star.

Alyssa Hunt led Rockwood with a 262.

Girls basketball

Shade 66, Conemaugh Valley 63: In Richland Township, Jenna Muha recorded a game-high 39 points to go along with 18 rebounds and six assists as the Panthers edged the Blue Jays in the consolation game of the Richland Holiday Tournament.

Wrestling

Penn Cambria 49, Conemaugh Township 23: Conemaugh Township suffered a setback to Penn Cambria in the Devil Duals.

Nathan Dail and Ryan Thomas picked up falls while Tristen Hawkins won by technical fall for Conemaugh Township.
